Did you know: JSON handling is so aggressively optimized in JS runtimes that often, the fastest way to deep-clone an object tree is to do a JSON stringify/parse cycle instead of iterating through the objects in your own code
me: how was dark souls made?
from software: from software
I am so incredibly sleepy today. can’t wait for it to be bedtime so I can get all my energy back instantly and be 100% awake with no desire to sleep whatsoever
last night, i caught myself feeling upset that one of my stuffed animals was getting a little dirty so i ended up giving him a bath. as i was brushing him, i caught myself singing and talking to him too
i’m realizing that i don’t want kids because i already have them
reading #ElderScrolls lore is wild because it’s either a really straightforward and easy-to-follow story with a footnote at the bottom about how it’s all fake, or it’s like
in the Second Winter of Shivering Time, central to the Meolithic era, Zanthurnikos did pierce upon e’raTra (which is the Delmatric upon which Re’etras is based) and begin the Age of Saint Malfarnikos who was blessed by the heart of the dream-corpse Lofankhish so that the Sundering could begin
Doom 2016 is $4 and DRM-free on GOG! I don’t like this game or recommend it but I thought I’d mention that in case anyone is interested
I learned two new terms today! these things (first image) are called “slider buckles”, and they’re the plastic things that let you loosen or tighten the straps on E.G. a backpack
and these things (second image) are called “side squeeze buckles”
also, the way that side squeeze buckles lock together is called “indexing”. one half of the buckle “indexes” the other half - locking it in place
I fucking love the Dwemer in #ElderScrolls lore. in a world where no other race has any concept of empiricism or justified belief (everyone is just making shit up and stating it confidently and killing anyone who dares to disagree) the Dwemer respect fucking nothing and no one and demand everything be proven in repeatable experiments
there’s a story where a Dwemer proves that Azura isn’t actually all-knowing to her fucking face. she curses him and he dies that night but he dies happy because he proved that she’s a liar and it’s incredible (it’s called Azura and the Box)
unfortunately a lot of the writing about Dwemer falls into anti-empiricism/anti-science tropes (like the whole “wiped out because of their hubris” type stuff, and also “science means no morals”) but I like to retcon that in my head. which is pretty easy to do since almost all information about the Dwemer that’s accessible in the games comes from multiple ages later, and is generally written/translated by an unreliable source
the more I learn about JS the more I realize that it’s literally just Lua plus some Python niceties plus a nightmare ecosystem plus T̶̻̒h̷̳̔e̶̙͆ ̷̩̋F̸̮͠ȍ̴̘r̴̫̾b̸͈͋î̵͜ď̵̟d̸̟́e̴͚͆n̴̬͝ ̷̠͝t̷̬̕ë̷̤c̶̺̃h̴͚́n̸̟̈́i̷̬͠q̷̟͒u̷͕͠e̶̡͒ș̶̈́
my depression meal for the day was a slice of white bread with a slice of pepperjack cheese that I put in the microwave for 30 seconds
and you know what? it was actually surprisingly good. I’m probably going to make it again sometime. maybe I’ll get extra fancy and put it in the toaster oven
I’m going to go back in time and kill whoever decided that CSS should only allow C-style block comments and not C-style line comments
4 spaces of indentation looks wrong in CSS and JS, but 2 spaces is too small to see at a glance T_T
this is pretty much exactly how I feel about Dark Souls’ RPG elements
The GNU "nano" text editor is named by analogy, after an earlier (non-Free) editor with a very similar UI, called "pico". The name puns on SI prefixes: "like pico, but a bit bigger."
"pico" was derived from the email client Pine: it's the built-in editor Pine used for composing emails, pulled out and turned into a standalone tool. Short for PIne COmposer, as far as I know.
And Pine was _also_ named by analogy, after an earlier email client called Elm.
So "nano" has _two_ instances of "name a program by analogy to a previous one" in the history of how it got its name. (Not counting the step in between where 'pine' gave rise to 'pico', because that wasn't by analogy.)
Can anyone think of a longer chain than that, involving three or more generations of naming-by-analogy? Or is "nano" the record holder?
#DarkSouls 1 is still incredibly fun (when it’s not demoralizing 😅) 14 years later! I’m really happy for the remaster, and for the fact that the remaster still has so many active players
obviously there are more recent Soulslike games with faster gameplay and higher difficulty but I think Dark Souls 1 is in the upper range of difficulties that I’m willing to tolerate lol, and I really like that the gameplay feels medium-paced and deliberate instead of being a frenetic clusterfuck like a lot of Elden Ring bosses
also, for the first time I’m using a
character build
and I’m actually kinda enjoying it this way because it lets me not care about the RPG number-twiddling (which is so far beyond me it makes my head spin
) and focus on the gameplay
