TIL that SSDs can lose data if left unplugged for long periods of time (only required to hold data up to 1 year), unlike HDDs which as long as the material holds it can take years.
@kasdeya 4k scales cleanly into 1080 (at the same aspect ratio) because it's a 2160px vertical resolution (which is exactly double 1080px) — it's only 2k that has the weird fractional scaling issues because 1440 is 1.333 times as tall as 1080
@kasdeya For Dutch there is a contest on TV/Radio where the contestants meet in the Senate chamber, and everyone has to copy down a text being read out by the presenter. The one with the fewest spelling mistakes wins. (This is an international competition shared between the Netherlands and Belgium. The winner is almost always a Flemish contestant.)
Dutch spelling has a few weird cases, for example the past tense marker being a -t or -d based on the sound preceding it, but this difference is pronounced only in a few verb forms. But most of the challenge comes from spelling loan words inserted sans gêne into the text, the author going as wild as a przewalski horse.
It has happened once in history that they got zero mistakes:

@kasdeya in china instead of spelling bees they have contests to see who can find a character in a dictionary first
that feels even worse somehow
just a little PSA but for gaming I would recommend getting a monitor that’s exactly 1920x1080 and not any higher or lower res than that
I got a 2k monitor thinking that bigger number = better monitor, but the problem is:
so basically just don’t get a 2k or 4k monitor unless you want to deal with the headaches mentioned above
many don’t know this but there are actually two distinct techniques for creating a bass sound while beatboxing. they produce roughly equivalent timbres, but different beatboxers need to use different techniques depending upon the size of their heads
specifically, if someone’s mouth is too small for creating the appropriate resonance, they need to learn to create that resonance in their throat instead. this is known as the “smallmouth bass” technique, as opposed to the “largemouth bass” technique
@bigtuffal omg I’ve never heard of Franken before but it looks cute! and I love that it’s so short
a lot of folks will say that [insert any JRPG here] gets good after 10, 20, maybe even 60 hours. and I literally can not even fathom:
if a game isn’t fun within the first hour it’s literally just a bad game. I used to give games the benefit of the doubt and play for 4+ hours waiting to get to the fun part but you know how many times the fun part was worth it? zero
so if you’re reading this, I’m giving you permission to uninstall anything you’re not enjoying after the first hour. honestly even the first 30 minutes is generally enough if you have a bad enough first impression
those upgrade systems that seem overly complicated and pointless? they probably are. the combat loop that seems overbearingly hectic? it probably is. the painful story that’s being shoved down your throat? it’s probably going to get worse
so uninstall that bloated AAA monstrosity and try some indie games instead. you’ll probably find something you really like - instead of wasting your time on something you hate on the off chance that it “gets good” later
playing a new AAA game be like:
@CenTdemeern1 I really like to see what Fedi folks are talking about with certain hashtags! often if I have a new special interest I’ll think of a few related hashtags and look at what’s posted with them, and if I like what’s posted then I’ll follow that hashtag
