software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I try to be very careful about CWing things. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible

I sometimes post NSFW/kinky/lewd things behind CWs. this should go without saying but if you're a minor please do not interact with anything lewd/NSFW that I post

I have very limited energy and am very shy so it might take me a long time to reply to messages sometimes, or I might not be able to reply at all. this is kind of an "output only" account for the most part, but I'm hopeful that I can change that over time

I sometimes use curly braces to {clearly show where a grammatical phrase begins and ends}, like that. you can think of them like parenthesis in code or math, except they operate on grammar instead

Strange Antiquities is Really Good if you happen to like solving puzzles, organizing things, dark spookiness, petting a kitty, and feeling like an occult practitioner. I definitely recommend it

genuinely one of my favorite things about Lisp-like languages is how variable names can include so many symbols. I love how, for example, all of my functions that return booleans can end in a question mark - and all of my functions that are called only for their side effects can end in an exclamation point. imagine having list.append() which returns a new list, and list.append!() which modifies the existing list, except that works for all methods

I’m almost tempted to write my Python code in a similar way - for example the _x suffix would mean “called for side effects only” and the _p suffix would mean “answers a question and returns a boolean”

it’s a really nice way to have both concision and clarity - both of which are important for good code IMO

@catgirl_so firmwear brought to mind living in a sterile white futuristic pod, filled with panels that slide away to reveal whatever I need. honestly not the worst fantasy - especially if it has full dive VR

what's the go-to recommendation for a distro for nontechnical creatures these days anyways?
pop_os? mint? telling your friends to "just follow the guide to install gentoo, it's super easy?"

@wizzwizz4 ooh thank you! I’ll probably give this a try the next time I’m playing. I know that it’s possible to pause with Esc but that opens the pause menu of course - which isn’t quite what I’d want, but does help give me time to think

I feel like pauseable-real-time is very underappreciated. it’s not just very satisfying to people like me, but it’s also a helpful accessibility tool for those with slow reaction times or anyone who needs time to think. I feel like it’s mostly associated with strategy games but I’d love to see more genres add it - especially tower defense games like BTD6 (which I’ve been obsessed with lately. it’s a Very Good Game)

to be honest I would probably overuse it in BTD6 but it would also help me manage the chaos of some of the later free play rounds. plus I could pause when I feel like things are going badly and take a moment to think about how to respond, which would actually help me engage even more deeply with the game’s systems (like abilities, which I mostly don’t touch)

writing code in Python is

  • 10% writing the code
  • 80% figuring out why it won’t work
  • 10% being suspicious of if it’s actually working this time

writing code in Rust is

  • 10% writing the code
  • 20% trying to decipher what the compiler is unhappy about
  • 15% googling compiler errors and getting even more confused
  • 30% forming and testing superstitions about the compiler
  • 20% changing your code randomly in the hopes that you can brute-force a solution that will compile
  • 5% giving up and writing it in Python instead

@ljrk ohh interesting! I guess that does make more sense. it would be weird to be in an American city in a video game and dial 112 - even if everyone is conveniently speaking German

@tempest oohh interesting. I think I like that - it reminds me of Fallout’s dialog system, as well as (a little bit) Morrowind’s. it also reminds me of narrative puzzle games like Her Story, where you have to figure out which search terms to use based on the story that you know so far

random thought but I wonder if different localizations of GTA V change the number that you dial to get emergency services

in the US it’s 911 but I wonder if E.G. the German localization changes it to 112, or if it stays as 911 since the game is set in the US

@tempest oohh interesting! it sounds really cool to be honest

I’ve never heard of a text game where you can have conversations with characters. how do you know which things you can say/ask?

one day god lord jesus was bored

so he made humans to suck his cock for eternity. and they all took turns sucking him. and if they didn’t he put them in his torture basement. and everything was good and holy

except god lord jesus decided that everyone was bad, and he could never forgive them. so he torture-murdered himself as a burnt offering to himself so he could forgive them

and now we can all suck his cock forever or else we go in the torture basement because of how much he loves us amen

an artist can draw line art which is 100% sfw and fine

and then draw one small line and it instantly becomes nsfw and banned and dangerous to children
