software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I have strong opinions about #Lisp but love S-expressions. I also have strong opinions about video games, TTRPGs, software, and programming in general and I post about them a lot

I like to use curly braces to {group words together} to make my sentences easier to parse. for example, try reading the garden path sentence "the complex houses married and single soldiers and their families", and now try reading it with curly braces: "{the complex} houses {married and single soldiers and their families}"

I try to thoroughly CW anything that I post or boost which might be triggering, or just cause strong emotions like outrage or fear. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible. I even CW when I'm {complaining about} or {making fun of} something in case you don't want to hear a stranger criticize something you love

replying to messages is very energy-intensive for me, so I may not reply to certain messages at all, or it may take me a long time. DMs are especially hard

We're back again today with another look at the challenging yet fascinating modpack, Underdog. Fun fact, when I was planning on making the sequel to There Will Be Blood, this sort of emphasis on environmental difficulty rather than brutal combat that it's predecessor focused on was exactly what I was going for, and I really enjoyed these early stages of the pack! Honestly I wouldn't mind returning if it weren't for changes that occurred due to pack updates, but we'll get to those later.

All in all, the pack does what it sets out to, and I have since found a different pack that has grabbed my attention. Maybe someday we'll do some streams of that...

discussion of debate tactics, nazi mention
Show content

Something that happens a lot online is that people hear an argument, mentally replace it with a similar-sounding but different argument and start arguing against that.

What I'm describing is basically a strawman, yeah, but it's a lot more unconscious and less actively malicious than how you'd typically imagine a strawman argument.

When Prokopetz called out a similar tendency, he called it "refusing to engage with each others shorthands" and that's a pretty good way of describing it.

Like, a specific example I've seen a lot is "nazis can't be punk" (with the context making it very clear it's not intended as a statement of fact but a statement of intent, that is, saying nazis should have no place in punk) being interpreted as "no punks are ever nazis" (not really what anyone was implying in this context).

This is a good illustration of what's meant by "refusing to engage with someone elses shorthand". "Nazis can't be punk" is a shorthand for a stance on who should and shouldn't feel welcome in punk spaces and pretty much everyone who's actually involved in the conversation knows what's meant, the nazis certainly know, though they pretend not to as a rhetorical tactic.

Obviously, if people are implying that there's never been rightwing punks, that's worth calling out as factually incorrect, but people sometimes get so caught up in Being Right that they'll literally run interference for nazis to do it.

hi fediverse, in your opinion which is the lisp-like language that best maximizes for (a) usefulness and (b) non-toxic community? (i'm trying to pick one to learn and maybe actually get good at?)

I just realized I haven't even done an introduction post, I just do things in the wrong order lol.

ablobcathappypaws Hi, I'm Konstruct. I am a heart_pansexual pansexual Blobhaj_Flag_Genderfluid genderfluid human [for now]. I am poly ! But I am lonely. ;-;
I have autism and ADHD, my interests are:
- Foss, linux and ricing
- Adblocking, online privacy, piracy, (niche) information hoarding/discovery
- Digital art, atypical music (drone, breakcore, and songs with interesting sound and textures) in hi-fi
- Writing, horror ("new weird" and SCP-like fiction) and anarchist ideals.
- NSFW stuff that I won't talk about here, but I try to be unashamed about it behind content warns.

I'm pretty emotionally sensitive and convoluted. I hope everyone can be comfortable with me. Sometimes, I can be awkward or accidentally offensive. blobcatmeltcry I deeply apologize for that. Tell me if it happens! Words sound a lot better in my head before I say them.

Please boost so I can make friends!

TIL that SSDs can lose data if left unplugged for long periods of time (only required to hold data up to 1 year), unlike HDDs which as long as the material holds it can take years.

just a little PSA but for gaming I would recommend getting a monitor that’s exactly 1920x1080 and not any higher or lower res than that

I got a 2k monitor thinking that bigger number = better monitor, but the problem is:

  • basically every video game is designed for 1080p or below
  • which means that above 1080p the UI elements are probably going to be tiny and hard to read at best
  • and you might not even be able to play certain games at a resolution above 1080p
  • btw if you try to play a game that’s rendering at 1080p on a 2k screen, everything looks blurry and it’s kinda terrible
  • also, some games have optimization problems that only become apparent once you try to run them above 1080p

so basically just don’t get a 2k or 4k monitor unless you want to deal with the headaches mentioned above

many don’t know this but there are actually two distinct techniques for creating a bass sound while beatboxing. they produce roughly equivalent timbres, but different beatboxers need to use different techniques depending upon the size of their heads

specifically, if someone’s mouth is too small for creating the appropriate resonance, they need to learn to create that resonance in their throat instead. this is known as the “smallmouth bass” technique, as opposed to the “largemouth bass” technique

when i was 12 i fantasized abt making a roguelike using hieroglyph unicode instead of ascii, thinking itd lean into some sorta farming lifesim thing, or go all in on depicting a journey thru death as close to the mythology as wasnt boring, or put the two together for a transition after u die. i havent been super tapped into the roguelike scene like i used to be, does anything remotely like this exist?
