software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I try to be very careful about CWing things. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible

I sometimes post NSFW/kinky/lewd things behind CWs. this should go without saying but if you're a minor please do not interact with anything lewd/NSFW that I post

I have very limited energy and am very shy so it might take me a long time to reply to messages sometimes, or I might not be able to reply at all. this is kind of an "output only" account for the most part, but I'm hopeful that I can change that over time

I sometimes use curly braces to {clearly show where a grammatical phrase begins and ends}, like that. you can think of them like parenthesis in code or math, except they operate on grammar instead

One of my favorite takes ever on "male vs. female socialization" ever, that I still use in my analysis to this day, was one that was purported by Jesse Early (the YouTuber). It goes something like:

It's not simply that people assigned male are socialized as male and people assigned female are socialized female. Rather, all persons are both taught the rules and expectations for males as well as females. Then, the go out in the world and police themselves and others accordingly.

Put simply, we are all given both male and female socialization.

here are two #unicode web tools that I’ve found incredibly helpful over the years:

What Unicode character is this ? – paste in one or more characters and it will tell you exactly what they are

Shapecatcher – draw something MSPaint-style and this will try to find a Unicode character that matches what you drew!

About a month ago, i posted a message to the sumud flotilla, hoping to give them courage & comfort as they set sail

Today, i found out they not only received the message, but they wrote it on the side of one of the boats and directed it at the Palestinian people

Greta put her face in front of it

He'd be so mad to know im using his invention like this

nixos, bigotry, full time nix podcast

The guy running the "Full Time Nix" podcast who goes by the names "mightyiam" or Shahar "Dawn" Or joined the SC election room last night to ask this.

This is bona fide bigotry, and he should be removed from this community.

But at the very least people representing the community should stop appearing on his platform.

I'll add another receipt to drive the point home. His profile on hachyderm was swiftly banned after this exchange.

OKAY. Windows 10 EOL is right around the corner in ~2 weeks.

Because I've had to put out multiple all-caps panic attack fires within my own friend circle over this bullshit, I just spent my Monday night after work writing an article outlining a few paths forward post 10-pocalypse that anyone wondering what to do can do.

The first thing you need to do is this:

Don't panic.

Achievement unlocked: I have ridden a bicycle with square wheels. This is from earlier this week at our department's "block party" for our majors and interested students.

I'm proud (and a bit intimidated TBH) to work in the same department as Stan Wagon, the mathematician who made the square wheel bike -- and the surface on which you can ride it.

whenever a game has three factions that you can side with, one of the factions will always be fascists, and one of the factions will probably be American-coded

  • in New Vegas the three factions are fascists, American soldiers, and ruthless capitalists
  • in Elite: Dangerous the three factions are fascists, ruthless American capitalists, and the Federation from Star Trek
  • in PlanetSide 2 the three factions are American fascists, freedom-fighters, and Raëlians

also either one of the factions will obviously be the good guys, or all of the factions will kinda seem like bad guys

reviewers will be like “the graphics are a little dated” and I’ll look at the game and genuinely not be able to tell what they’re talking about? I feel like I’m getting too old to understand what bad graphics are anymore lol

Content warning discourse, whiteness
Show content

Person: "white people have an issue with being uncomfortable..."
Yeah ok
"And that's why I don't use content warnings"
blobcatfacepalm

I can see how they reached that conclusion, but it's not right
Having things like a trauma or addiction triggered is not "uncomfortable", they're potentially dangerous situations. And you aren't placed to decide what a "real trigger" is
Further, content warnings are about respect for your audience, giving people agency in what they engage with. This is why one of the more common arguments against them is "this is too important for a CW", on some level they don't want to respect people's agency

IMO, you can see this in the sort of people who object to content warnings. It's mostly people who are arguing that they shouldn't have to think about other people and what's needed to build psychological safety
I'll use their example of politics: the constant bombardment of political news is a major stressor for a lot of people. People are probably aware of these things, they don't need to be subjected to our yelling, and that sort of constant stress is bad for us. It's not about comfort, it's about safety
