I’m kind of upset that literally none of the Beyond Citadel reviews I can find mention Hideous Destructor. is it really such an obscure game? it’s clearly the game’s biggest influence but the closest I could find was a mention of Brutal Doom idk

(you can redeem them until March 20th) I had very mixed feelings about these games but I think there’s enough good in them to give them a try if you like CRPGs. not sure if anyone would want to play them on a phone or tablet though but I thought I’d mention that that’s an option

whelp the Steam community is toxic as ever

I’ve been posting feedback for nextfest demos on the Steam community forums and people (not the devs) have been replying with stuff like “lol your PC is shit” and “how can you play in such a stupid way”

I guess next time I’m going to see if I can contact the devs directly

noo the ZDoom forum is down! I hope it comes back soon - I just found out about a mod that I want to try

I highly recommend trying the demo for White Knuckle. it’s basically a full game as-is - I don’t even know what else they could add to it, besides some minor polish

This is such a fun app. It's basically Wikipedia, but as a 3D museum and you get to walk from article to article, because the software turns links in to corridors.

This is especially fun for wiki running, as now you can literally run!

apparently it’s not just Mario 64 that’s been decompiled - some people have decompiled Perfect Dark and #OcarinaOfTime (maybe others too?) and created PC ports of these games with an absolutely beautiful amount of QoL features, as well as mouselook and a ton of other stuff

they even made it really intuitive and simple to set up, with a helpful guide and everything. I was kinda worried that the PC ports were going to be made by a bunch of Linux People™ who were going to make it arcane as shit but no, the entire game is configured through the simplest and most straightforward GUI ever and I love it

so I’ve been reliving my childhood by playing Ocarina of Time in 2k at 144 FPS

I hated all the dialog boxes as a kid but when you speed them up to scroll twice as fast, they’re really not that bad at all and I’m actually enjoying the story a fair bit. it’s amazing how such a simple change to the UI can change my whole attitude towards the story like that

it feels great to have a game that feels made for me, for once. even if it is just a really really good port of an older game

sometimes I think that I’d like to work on the codebases of my favorite Minecraft mods - especially the ones that feel neglected or abandoned

and then I look at the code that they’re built on and see how Java it is and, no I don’t

like I think HyperWorld is a really cool idea for a mod and I wish it weren’t abandoned but I can not overemphasize how much I do not want to learn what a BlockStateVariantDeserializer is

thanks to @rowan I learned some fun #4D terms (taken from here) that I want to share:

ana: the direction towards +W (this is an absolute direction, like north)

kata: the direction towards -W (this is an absolute direction, like north)

wint: the “up”/positive direction perpendicular to your hyperplane (in other words, the “up” direction that you can’t see from inside of your hyperplane)

zant: the “down”/negative direction perpendicular to your hyperplane (in other words, the “down” direction that you can’t see from inside of your hyperplane)

here’s an example to hopefully explain what wint and zant mean: let’s say that your hyperplane is aligned with X, Y, and W - so you can’t see along the Z axis. that means the +Z direction is wint, and the -Z direction is zant

also, I made up the term “zwideways” to mean “across the wint-zant axis”. so for example “they pushed me sideways” means “they pushed me left or right” but “they pushed me zwideways” means “they pushed me wint or zant” (which is much more disorienting!)

Linux users be like “you should’ve read the docs” and then link to the most cryptic, jargon-filled, half-assed documentation you’ve ever seen in your life

This definitely helped my day already. Goes double for being nonbinary trans and median plural with aphantasia that cloaks both.

#4DGolf is so much better than I ever would’ve thought

golf is genuinely such a perfect medium for playing in 4 dimensions, all of the UI (including the controls) around rotating my 3D hyperplane are so well-designed that they quickly became intuitive, and the fucking volume view is actually genius. not to mention the 4D “shadows” that let you see any structures that are outside of your hyperplane

I actually feel like I almost have a handle on maneuvering in 4D spaces in this game, which is something that I was never able to experience in 4D Miner despite a lot of playtime. I think the simple, focused, linear paths help a lot with that but I also just think that the volume view is an incredible learning tool for understanding 4D spaces intuitively

anyway I highly recommend this game if you like 4D stuff or if you just like having your brain broken and trying to piece together an understanding of something that’s way beyond you
