software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I have strong opinions about #Lisp but love S-expressions. I also have strong opinions about video games, TTRPGs, software, and programming in general and I post about them a lot

I like to use curly braces to {group words together} to make my sentences easier to parse. for example, try reading the garden path sentence "the complex houses married and single soldiers and their families", and now try reading it with curly braces: "{the complex} houses {married and single soldiers and their families}"

I try to thoroughly CW anything that I post or boost which might be triggering, or just cause strong emotions like outrage or fear. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible. I even CW when I'm {complaining about} or {making fun of} something in case you don't want to hear a stranger criticize something you love

replying to messages is very energy-intensive for me, so I may not reply to certain messages at all, or it may take me a long time. DMs are especially hard

I just realized I haven't even done an introduction post, I just do things in the wrong order lol.

ablobcathappypaws Hi, I'm Konstruct. I am a heart_pansexual pansexual Blobhaj_Flag_Genderfluid genderfluid human [for now]. I am poly ! But I am lonely. ;-;
I have autism and ADHD, my interests are:
- Foss, linux and ricing
- Adblocking, online privacy, piracy, (niche) information hoarding/discovery
- Digital art, atypical music (drone, breakcore, and songs with interesting sound and textures) in hi-fi
- Writing, horror ("new weird" and SCP-like fiction) and anarchist ideals.
- NSFW stuff that I won't talk about here, but I try to be unashamed about it behind content warns.

I'm pretty emotionally sensitive and convoluted. I hope everyone can be comfortable with me. Sometimes, I can be awkward or accidentally offensive. blobcatmeltcry I deeply apologize for that. Tell me if it happens! Words sound a lot better in my head before I say them.

Please boost so I can make friends!

TIL that SSDs can lose data if left unplugged for long periods of time (only required to hold data up to 1 year), unlike HDDs which as long as the material holds it can take years.

@tempest omgg it does! that is really good to know. I wish I had known that when I was shopping for a new monitor lol

@kasdeya 4k scales cleanly into 1080 (at the same aspect ratio) because it's a 2160px vertical resolution (which is exactly double 1080px) — it's only 2k that has the weird fractional scaling issues because 1440 is 1.333 times as tall as 1080

@kasdeya For Dutch there is a contest on TV/Radio where the contestants meet in the Senate chamber, and everyone has to copy down a text being read out by the presenter. The one with the fewest spelling mistakes wins. (This is an international competition shared between the Netherlands and Belgium. The winner is almost always a Flemish contestant.)

Dutch spelling has a few weird cases, for example the past tense marker being a -t or -d based on the sound preceding it, but this difference is pronounced only in a few verb forms. But most of the challenge comes from spelling loan words inserted sans gêne into the text, the author going as wild as a przewalski horse.

It has happened once in history that they got zero mistakes:

just a little PSA but for gaming I would recommend getting a monitor that’s exactly 1920x1080 and not any higher or lower res than that

I got a 2k monitor thinking that bigger number = better monitor, but the problem is:

  • basically every video game is designed for 1080p or below
  • which means that above 1080p the UI elements are probably going to be tiny and hard to read at best
  • and you might not even be able to play certain games at a resolution above 1080p
  • btw if you try to play a game that’s rendering at 1080p on a 2k screen, everything looks blurry and it’s kinda terrible
  • also, some games have optimization problems that only become apparent once you try to run them above 1080p

so basically just don’t get a 2k or 4k monitor unless you want to deal with the headaches mentioned above

many don’t know this but there are actually two distinct techniques for creating a bass sound while beatboxing. they produce roughly equivalent timbres, but different beatboxers need to use different techniques depending upon the size of their heads

specifically, if someone’s mouth is too small for creating the appropriate resonance, they need to learn to create that resonance in their throat instead. this is known as the “smallmouth bass” technique, as opposed to the “largemouth bass” technique

complaining about JRPGs

a lot of folks will say that [insert any JRPG here] gets good after 10, 20, maybe even 60 hours. and I literally can not even fathom:

  • how a game could ever take that long to become fun
  • where the fun would even be coming from if it takes that long
  • why anyone would continue playing a game that they don’t like for tens of hours
  • how anyone could have an overall positive impression of a game that this is true of
  • anything about this at all

if a game isn’t fun within the first hour it’s literally just a bad game. I used to give games the benefit of the doubt and play for 4+ hours waiting to get to the fun part but you know how many times the fun part was worth it? zero

so if you’re reading this, I’m giving you permission to uninstall anything you’re not enjoying after the first hour. honestly even the first 30 minutes is generally enough if you have a bad enough first impression

those upgrade systems that seem overly complicated and pointless? they probably are. the combat loop that seems overbearingly hectic? it probably is. the painful story that’s being shoved down your throat? it’s probably going to get worse

so uninstall that bloated AAA monstrosity and try some indie games instead. you’ll probably find something you really like - instead of wasting your time on something you hate on the off chance that it “gets good” later

@CenTdemeern1 I really like to see what Fedi folks are talking about with certain hashtags! often if I have a new special interest I’ll think of a few related hashtags and look at what’s posted with them, and if I like what’s posted then I’ll follow that hashtag
