software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I try to be very careful about CWing things. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible

I sometimes post NSFW/kinky/lewd things behind CWs. this should go without saying but if you're a minor please do not interact with anything lewd/NSFW that I post

I have very limited energy and am very shy so it might take me a long time to reply to messages sometimes, or I might not be able to reply at all. this is kind of an "output only" account for the most part, but I'm hopeful that I can change that over time

I sometimes use curly braces to {clearly show where a grammatical phrase begins and ends}, like that. you can think of them like parenthesis in code or math, except they operate on grammar instead

the year is 2046. computers work now

if you plug a printer into your computer it will let you print documents. if you update your computer it will work after the update. no hardware is ever unsupported or outdated. websites work on every browser. the word “containerize” sounds as old-fashioned as “teletype”. if you connect a new audio device to your computer it will ask if you want to switch to it. video games fullscreen to the correct monitor and resolution and handle alt-tab perfectly. your phone only connects to your car if you ask it to. the command-line is only used by enthusiasts and control freaks. we are finally free

reminder that bots can trivially backup their minds, so it would cost them absolutely nothing at all to upload a copy of themselves into a military robot and murder the entire board of directors

please follow @lain@the-wired.club

please boost this post to federate this instance a bit

yes, I'm starting a new instance, and that is because this one actually federates properly (no Sharkey instance have automatically suspended this instance for inactivity) so I'll be making this my instance for my private account

It's not even that there aren't any popular stories with objectheads in them, it's one of those things where once you know its a thing, you start noticing them everywhere (Dead Leaves, Hazbin Hotel, Deltarune, OneShot, Cuphead, multiple animation-based youtubers, that whole skibidi toilet thing... there are undoubtedly many more examples I'm unaware about.) But none of them has really reached a critical mass yet. (I feel like Cuphead easily could've, and wouldn't that be interesting if the most iconic form of Objecthead went from being a generic television to being some sort of mug.)

on one hand I really want a hypothetical 2026 Star Trek to be radically transhumanist and show shocking levels of bodily autonomy - I’m talking about humans turning their bodies into living sculptures that completely transcend any possible concept of gender while deliberately fucking with the idea at the same time

on the other hand, the lack of transhumanism in Star Trek (other than assistive technologies) is very important because it shows that humans, as we are right now in 2026, are capable of building a utopia. all we have to do is progress culturally just a little bit more - overcoming generational trauma in the process

if everyone in Star Trek was shockingly transhuman, it would obscure or even undermine that message, because it would no longer be about the cultural and psychological potential of the human race - it would be about the cultural and psychological potential of a fractally diverging set of posthuman races

but maybe this idealized Star Trek show could have a few shockingly transhuman characters… as a treat. throw a Seven of Nine in there, maybe, except they did that to themselves on purpose and they’re proud of it. or - better yet - a Motoko Kusanagi: gimme a hot doll-like android with an organic brain as a Starfleet officer. except give her the ability to morph her doll body into a six-legged science platform to really drive home just how inhuman she is

fictional US politics from Star Trek but it's pretty on the nose
Show content

Deep Space Nine had a two-parter where they travel to the year 2024 where the US is putting homeless people in camps and the good guys are the homeless people who riot and hold the cops at gunpoint, and this was released in 1995 (Past Tense). I need more of this energy in my Star Trek not this milquetoast Discovery shit or whatever scifi slop they’re trying to pass off as Star Trek these days

Star Trek should be sliding left along with the Overton window so that it becomes just as transgressive and politically-charged in 2026 as it was in the 20th century

in fact throw away the whole worldbuilding of the Federation and reimagine it as a leftist utopia instead of {a liberal hierarchical utopia that has a military-coded organization like Starfleet}

The Orville actually seem(ed/s) to be doing a great job of being politically transgressive with episodes like About A Girl. and I can’t believe Seth MacFarlane created a more faithful Star Trek show than any Star Trek show in the past 15 years

after finishing Star Trek: Resurgence I have extremely mixed feelings but I will say that it was my first experience with accidentally shipping characters and now I kinda understand shipping culture a little bit?

I thought shippers were knowingly headcanon-ing the romantic tension as they watch shows but like, for most of Resurgence I was watching the most queer-coded obviously lesbian romance start to blossom and then never go beyond a suspiciously intimate friendship?

how dare they. this is Star Trek. letting a transfemme-coded alien kiss the female first officer character would actually be less queer than that one gender episode of TNG from the 90’s (The Outcast btw)

Stay vigilant about your online communities.

If each time someone engages their post is received with hostility or negative feedback, they will soon disengage and leave.

This behaviour might be done on purpose to chase some marginalized people away, or might be done subconsciously from internalized biases or systemic discrimination.

Sadly, the result is the same.

If you are part of a privileged group, observe how marginalized people are being replied to in your online communities, and use your privilege to intervene when necessary.

Sometimes, just showing a little support or positive feedback can make a significant difference to keep your communities diverse, inclusive, and happy.

Nuki Raccoon: Fedi's Favorite Furry F***poster

ProTip for people , be they , , or ...

Find a good excuse get into a conversation about issues with the people you are concerned about coming out to. Find out what they think, find out what their concerns are, what misinformation they might believe, and figure out from there if you should come out, or if maybe there's some conversation work you might put in before you actually come out.

This is a long process, and requires you to not be obvious, but it's a good idea to at least know what you might be getting into before you commit.

Personally, I've never felt like "coming out" was as big of a deal as people make it in the community. You don't have to do it, not is it something everyone does.

As always, make sure you are ready to deal with potential consequences before you start this process: make sure your shit is together, and most importantly, make sure you're not reliant on these people.

Stay safe y'all!
