software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I try to be very careful about CWing things. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible

I sometimes post NSFW/kinky/lewd things behind CWs. this should go without saying but if you're a minor please do not interact with anything lewd/NSFW that I post

I have very limited energy and am very shy so it might take me a long time to reply to messages sometimes, or I might not be able to reply at all. this is kind of an "output only" account for the most part, but I'm hopeful that I can change that over time

I sometimes use curly braces to {clearly show where a grammatical phrase begins and ends}, like that. you can think of them like parenthesis in code or math, except they operate on grammar instead

I’ve been thinking about taking a really basic 6-month training course from my local community college, to do accounting work

I know almost nothing about accounting but with the tech industry in the US imploding, I thought my chances of getting hired to do this might be better

do any of y’all have experience with this kind of very basic accounting? the main things that I want to know are:

  • is it autistic-friendly?
  • is it possible to work remotely?
  • how easy/hard is it to get hired?

I’d love some of y’all’s input - I have no idea what I’m doing and I feel like I can’t even make educated guesses

Valve is building themselves another blue ocean of potential by fixing a service problem that is usually the big barrier for gaming in Linux. I hope the Steam machines do well too. https://frvr.com/blog/news/valves-brilliant-steam-deck-now-accounts-for-over-21-percent-of-all-linux-gamers/

I don’t get how Create became so popular. it’s so hard to do anything and even basic item processing is so intimidating T_T

I made a modpack for myself that specifically centers around Create and a few other mods like Crossroads, but I’ve been too scared to even touch Create itself lol

every time I buy a DNS address it’s like $1 or less and then 6 months later I get an email telling me that next year it’s going to be like $30 wtf

is Namecheap scamming me, or am I just really unlucky?

@kasdeya wait they wrote an article about this that contains a section titled “technical work as emotional regulation” which is a really good phrase/term i like a lot

Hey you. Yeah, you. If you've gotten this far, don't lose sight of the fact that you're fighting for the future. That you are bright, and capable, and in an important space in an important time.

Of the complexity that brought you here, or sight of the world that doesn't see this inner battle raging inside of our domain.

Don't look back on this and wonder if you could have done more.

woah!
Apparently Farscape is all on Youtube. Official channel has all the episodes. Did not expect that.

@frawst I agree with this so hard omg. I’ve been complaining about this kind of thing for years lol - all it does is make it so that there’s only a thin slice of the game that is an appropriate challenge for your level at any given time, instead of letting you explore the whole world and making the entire world be an appropriate challenge

I think there can be certain progression systems in games that are actually worthwhile, but the “number go up” style of progression is pointless at best IMO

@kasdeya this might be a hotter take but i think levelling up as a concept is kinda stupid

like, in most games as you progress, things are meant to get harder and harder over time so that as your skills improve, the game gives you a similar/increasing amount of challenge throughout

adding levels on top of that means you need to make the later parts of the game tougher to compensate, but at the end of the day it just makes numbers bigger without actually changing difficulty - there’s basically no difference between dealing 10 damage to a 30 hp enemy and dealing 1000 damage to a 3000 hp enemy, beyond simple “ooh number go up” monkey brain triggers

a well-designed game should be able to increase difficulty without needing such pointless number inflation

@OctaviaConAmore @sly_vi omg I had no idea you were so into the game! that sounds amazing but unfortunately I’m probably way too shy to play a game with you for now T_T I’m always working on my anxiety though so hopefully eventually I can do stuff like that

@liese oohh that does sound like it could come in handy! I like the distinction between “there’s nothing here” and “there’s something here but we don’t know what it is”

nono you see it’s very simple. undefined means “there’s nothing here”, but null means “there’s something here, and that something is nothing”

@mahryekuh the fact that these are two separate values in JavaScript is one of the decisions of all time

It is 20:30 (8:30 PM) on Sunday, the fourth of January in the year of our Lord 2026, and I am…

Looking up whether I want to use `null` or `undefined` in my JavaScript code.

We party hard here.

the replies to this post are so funny because it’s 75% “this is so fucking true lol - I feel called out” and 25% “umm actually Windows is the OS that really causes problems. [insert notoriously difficult distro] is literally perfect and so so easy to use and never breaks or has any problems whatsoever and if it ever did have any problems it’d be because you forgot to rekernel the sedconf.d into profligate mode which honestly anyone should be able to do in their sleep”

@kasdeya For all nerds, which have solved the Arch and NixOS challenges, I can suggest SadServers.

@kasdeya I hate how real this is

I call it a brain bug that doesn't let me be happy with things that work ootb

When my ecosystem works 100% and I have the mental space to do stuff, I keep fiddling with little moving parts in there

Then I get frustrated that things don't work and go on sidequests to fix or sandbox things
