I’ve been thinking about taking a really basic 6-month training course from my local community college, to do accounting work

I know almost nothing about accounting but with the tech industry in the US imploding, I thought my chances of getting hired to do this might be better

do any of y’all have experience with this kind of very basic accounting? the main things that I want to know are:

  • is it autistic-friendly?
  • is it possible to work remotely?
  • how easy/hard is it to get hired?

I’d love some of y’all’s input - I have no idea what I’m doing and I feel like I can’t even make educated guesses

@kasdeya taking a basic accounting course is a good idea if you're thinking about accounting at all. There are some aspects of accounting that you either get or don't get. it's good to take a basic intro to find out if you like it or hate it before investing more time and energy into thinking about it. Accounting is definitely possible to do remotely. Unfortunately many basic accounting tools are being infested with AI set up by people who don't understand accounting - so it's a mess.

Book keeping vs Accounting?

I have a mate who decided to work for himself as a bookkeeper and just help a handful of clients. Been going for thrifty years now. He hands off the legal stuff to an accountant, just does the basic setting up of books and a degree of data entry.

He's a great person to know. He's made a great career from it. Leaves the harder stuff to people who bill more per hour. Can recommend.

@kasdeya And getting hired right now may be a bit more difficult as many folks are thinking the computers can just take care of it. But, learning some accounting now could make you very hireable in the not too distant future when the realization of how bad some of the AI accounting really is hits and companies need someone that knows how to clean up the mess.

@kasdeya In theory basic accountancy is something that can easily be done remotely.

It is also something I can imagine being good for autistic folks as it tends to be detail orientated, and full of repetitive tasks that keep returning.

@kasdeya Good on you for this idea.
My partner works at one of the big accounting firms and they make no secret of the fact that sadly a large portion of accounting in the near future will be automated. It seems it might be a shrinking proferssion 😩

@ewen Despite what a lot of people would have you believe, bookkeeping is accounting. If the bookkeeping is bad, the higher level accounting will be bad. Accounting is much more than having a CPA! @kasdeya
