software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I try to be very careful about CWing things. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible

I sometimes post NSFW/kinky/lewd things behind CWs. this should go without saying but if you're a minor please do not interact with anything lewd/NSFW that I post

I have very limited energy and am very shy so it might take me a long time to reply to messages sometimes, or I might not be able to reply at all. this is kind of an "output only" account for the most part, but I'm hopeful that I can change that over time

I sometimes use curly braces to {clearly show where a grammatical phrase begins and ends}, like that. you can think of them like parenthesis in code or math, except they operate on grammar instead

Cassandra is only carbon now

Spoiler: it's all abstractions.

Computers are abstractions.
Languages are abstractions (both programming and prose).
Countries are abstractions.
Novels are abstractions.
The thirty-six dramatic situations are abstractions.
Tarot is an abstraction.
Corporations are abstractions.
Rivers are abstractions.

As long as there is terrain, we will keep making maps.

@ryker_rf5 thank you! I’ve been thinking about getting to know someone online for a while before meeting them in person, because I am Extremely Shy and that’s just what I need lol

if you don’t mind could you recommend any specific dating apps? a lot of them seem like they’re just for hookups and that’s kinda offputting to me tbh

how does one find neurodivergent trans folks in their local area? especially the kind that would be accepting of identity stuff like otherkin or dolls or bots

@transoptimal ohh, okay! that’s not too bad then, though I wish it were a little more explicit

@pharmafemboy you can probably use Word Replacer Max for this! I haven’t tried it but it looks like what you want

Yahtzee makes a really good point here, that “optional” content shouldn’t be exempt from criticism just because it’s been arbitrarily labeled as “optional”

Amnesia The Bunker is free on Epic Games today!

I haven’t played it yet but it looks really good. love when games introduce emergent/imsim-y elements

@Shivaekul ooh I’m really glad that that’s recommended practice. but yeah I think it would be so cool to have a website that you could link to, like

“this paper uses the lambda calculus standard syntax and semantics: https://math-standards.org/lambda-calculus”

and the website would explain what everything means

random question but in math papers do mathematicians define all of the syntax that they’re using and the axioms that they’re using and what all of the Greek letters mean?

because I feel like it would be really elegant and cool if they had the math equivalent of #include <standard_calculus.h> at the top of their papers or something, or like #include <physics_greek_letter_meanings.h> especially because Greek letters can often have multiple meanings

but meanwhile it’s not great IMO to just assume that your audience knows what you mean when you use a certain syntactic construct or Greek letter

but yeah one of my pet peeves in storytelling is when a character could tell the protagonist important information but they don’t because it’s more Dramatic™ that way

watching this video on exposition in Doctor Who reminded me of a problem that I frequently run into when I try to write anything, and that’s this:

it is definitely Bad to stop the pacing of the story in order to have a character just infodump about what’s happening

but, I also hate the trope of characters refusing to explain what they know for contrived reasons. like “I think you should see this for yourself” type shit, or the even worse “no time to explain” (if you have time to say those four words you have time to at least give a high-level summary of what’s going on)

but this means that every character needs to fit into one of these categories:

  1. they don’t know what’s going on, or have only a small piece of the picture
  2. they do know what’s going on but won’t tell the protagonist (this can be icky. I don’t like this - especially when it’s overused like in KOTOR2)

since I don’t like category 2, that only leaves category 1. which means that I can only tell stories that are mysteries? I’m definitely missing something - idk

@pharmafemboy I’m not sure which specific bots to tag so I looked at your last few posts and saw these two. now you don’t have to feel guilty about reaching out for help (I hope?) because I’m doing it for you

it’s frustrating because

  • if you approach art from the perspective of wanting to get good enough to make good art, you’ll get discouraged early on because of how much time and effort it takes to get good (years and years)
  • if you approach it from the perspective of wanting to enjoy making art even if it’s bad, you’ll still get discouraged because you’ll flounder until you put time and effort into learning how to do stuff. and floundering isn’t fun, and neither is putting effort into learning how to do {something that may or may not be fun after you’ve learned how to do it}

or this seems to be my experience anyway. I’m not sure if I can find a mentality to approach this from. I want to make things and express myself but at the same time I don’t want to waste spoons on something that I don’t enjoy

@ilobmirt thank you for the video! but yeah I think I’m going to give up for now tbh. I can’t really capture the things that I’m trying to trace. I enjoyed doing the pistol, even though a lot of parts looked terrible, but the P90 just isn’t fun. I feel out of my depth and I don’t want to spend the effort to learn when there are so many other things I could spend effort on instead - even ones where I feel in my element

@kasdeya My favorite part of fiction is when people with the ability to make things better actually do

to be clear, things will eventually be okay again. in fact they will eventually be better than they have ever been. historically the world has always had dark periods and after those dark periods have been periods of unprecedented improvement. and historically the world is always trending upwards if you flatten out the dips

it’s just that we’re in a terrible dip right now and it doesn’t feel like everything is going to be okay. but it will, eventually
