But Soatok, if you agree that centralization is bad, why do you still recommend Signal?

Because Signal is the only app that currently implements E2EE correctly that isn't owned by Meta.

If you want people to use your "federated" or "decentralized" faves, they really need to step up their game on how cryptography is implemented. Matrix, XMPP, whatever. I will never recommend anything that isn't at least as secure as Signal is.

So yeah, I wiped out my computer yet again because I love Linux and that includes all the problems and frustrations that come with it.

And with that change - This has been a good moment for me to de-couple my dependence on using everything with a web browser and maybe, just maybe (on the desktop) I can de-enshittify my life.

If I understand this correctly the reason RAM has quadrupled in price is that a huge quantity of RAM that hasn't been produced has been bought with money that doesn't exist to populate GPUs that also haven't been produced to go in datacenters that haven't been built powered by infrastructure that might never exist to meet a demand that doesn't exist at all to make profit margins that mathematically can't exist while economists talk about this thing they call the "rational markets hypothesis".
