software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I try to be very careful about CWing things. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible

I sometimes post NSFW/kinky/lewd things behind CWs. this should go without saying but if you're a minor please do not interact with anything lewd/NSFW that I post

I have very limited energy and am very shy so it might take me a long time to reply to messages sometimes, or I might not be able to reply at all. this is kind of an "output only" account for the most part, but I'm hopeful that I can change that over time

I sometimes use curly braces to {clearly show where a grammatical phrase begins and ends}, like that. you can think of them like parenthesis in code or math, except they operate on grammar instead

One of the neat things about the IBM Selectric typewriter is that it has interchangeable "typeballs" for different fonts/languages. And now someone figured out how to 3D print custom ones, so now you can type on a Selectric in Comic Sans. https://www.printables.com/model/441233-comic-sans-typeball-for-the-ibm-selectric-typewrit

For those of us with ADHD, if you are thinking about a task every second you’re not doing it and desperately want to do the task more than anything else and are devastated that you can’t do it so much that you use all your energy just on trying to make yourself do the thing that you want to do but can’t, that is NOT procrastination. That is executive dysfunction. It only seems like procrastination to people who have never experienced executive dysfunction and those who have only ever experienced executive dysfunction.

Procrastination is when you fully have the ability to do something and choose not to do it but to do the thing you prefer doing instead. I hadn’t experienced this until very recently, after a lot of therapy and medication.

“Where’s your autopilot?”

“You’re looking at it”

“All I see is a bunch of cogs and shafts. Where’s the computer?”

“That’s the computer”

“You have a *clockwork* jumpdrive. For the love of Eris, why?”

“The best human takes forty seconds to recover from jumpshock. There isn’t a digital computer that can tell a one from a zero in under a minute postjump. Belinda here will have us into the next wormhole before those customs cutters chasing us stop drooling.”

“You *named* this abomination”

“Hey, no cause to be mean to her! You can get out and walk anytime, friend.”

@desea omg I had never heard the term birch sugar before! apparently xylitol is called birch sugar because it was found in birch bark, which is where it gets the name

although these days it looks like xylitol is mostly made from xylose which can be extracted from a ton of different plant parts of various plants https://www.celignis.com/bioprocess-xylitol.php

omg y’all know how sugar alcohols cause that minty/cooling feeling in your mouth when you eat them?

apparently they are literally cooling your mouth down. when sugar alcohols are in crystal form and they dissolve in a liquid, the process is endothermic so it literally sucks the heat from your mouth a little bit

also: sugar alcohols are a little less sweet than regular sugar, but they still have a drastically higher sweetness-to-calorie ratio than sugar, and that’s because your intestines have a much harder time absorbing them into your bloodstream than regular sugar

hey, uh. maybe we shouldn’t be romanticizing death or coming up with “deep” reasons why it’s good, actually. maybe we should be trying to prolong life as long as possible, and eventually cure death completely

I hate the concept of “overqualified” like
apparently it’s possible for your resume to make you sound like you’re too good at a job? like:

  • if I’m applying for a shitty job, it’s obvious that it’s because I’m desperate enough to take it. do I need to list all of my failed interviews and job applications as proof of my desperation and complete lack of viable alternatives in life?
  • how am I even supposed to write my resume to make me sound like a good worker for a shitty job in the first place? like

hello my skillset is lukewarm and I haven’t achieved a threatening amount of things in my life whatsoever. I have basically no prospects and am desperate for money, no matter how little you choose to give me. I am fairly competent at performing tasks as instructed but the light in my eyes died years ago and now I live only for the daily toil. I don’t know how to stand up for myself or set boundaries and I am always polite even when being abused by my superiors, who I respect unconditionally. I have very little individuality, creativity, or free spirit and it’s very easy to manipulate me into working at an unsustainable pace until I burn out

first impressions of Stalker 2 are Very Bad but I’m hoping the game will get better once I get out of the scripted tutorial(?) section at the beginning and get into the open-ended part of the game
