Fox girlfriend insisted that I refer to myself in the third person and as "princess". So, I tried it on.
Everytime I do it, she does the CUTEST giggle I think I might have ever heard.

@tempest flavor a infinite scrolling: it actually keeps stuff in memory for everything it shows so it slowly blows up my ram
flavor b infinite scrolling: it recycles all the items and caches nothing so it’s slower than pagination but also somehow less usable
also the scrollbar isn’t useful in flavor a or b

I keep wanting to mentally separate supremacy from {a lack of empathy and moral concern for a group} - as if it’s a mistake to conflate the two - but I don’t think that’s the case. I think that as soon as we feel superior to a group, we automatically lose at least some amount of our empathy and moral concern for members of that group. I don’t think that a feeling of superiority of any kind towards another person/creature/thing can exist without the implicit understanding that the target of this supremacy has a less valuable life than one’s ingroup
even for beloved pets, the average American is not going to spend thousands of dollars in cancer treatments to save them from death. but they would for a family member. instead they’re going to “put them down” in order to save money. it’s telling that human euthanasia is illegal in the US due to moral concerns, but completely normalized for pets
I don’t think that it is a contradiction at all to be able to honestly say “I love my pet dog so much. they’re one of the most important things in the world to me. but if they get sick and the treatment is more expensive than I want to pay I will choose to kill them in order to save money”. I think that human neurology is perfectly capable of deeply loving a thinking creature while also valuing its life this little
and that’s something that I want to emphasize, that Rowan alluded to in its post: it is entirely possible to believe - with no malice or anger whatsoever - “the lives of [outgroup] hold no value and they must all be exterminated, because their existence harms [ingroup]”. if this doesn’t make sense to you, try mentally replacing [outgroup] and [ingroup] with “mosquitoes” and “humans” respectively. now try mentally replacing them with “immigrants” and “white Americans”
I think it is so important to be able to understand this flaw in human empathy, that allows atrocities to happen. we can’t just dehumanize supremacists into cartoon villains, because that is implicitly denying that we have the same capacity to do and think like they do: that supremacy comes as naturally to us as it does to them. and that is exactly why we still have fascists

I’m trying to figure out how the anti-save-scumming system for a game called Teleglitch works. here’s what I’ve figured out so far:
- when you make a save, the game also secretly hides information about the save somewhere (the information seems to only consist of “the next save that the user loads should be for level XYZ” or “there should be no savefile. if there’s a savefile, it’s invalid”. all other edits to the savefile are accepted by the game as correct - including edits that instantly freeze the game)
- when you try to load the save, the game compares the secret information with the information in the savefile. if the information doesn’t match, the savefile is considered invalid and the game refuses to load it
- the savefile is stored in a Steam Cloud directory called
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\«some numbers»\«more numbers»\remote - the secret information is definitely not stored in this directory (I made the whole thing into a git repo and used that to “rewind time” to make 100% sure)
- the secret information is also not stored in the game’s directory (
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\TeleglitchDME) (same thing - I made it into a git repo) - I’ve checked every registry operation and every file I/O operation using Process Monitor but I’m 90% sure that Process Monitor is missing certain important things that Teleglitch is doing - maybe because it’s delegating tasks to {another process / a subprocess}? but Process Monitor can’t even see Teleglitch write to the Steam Cloud save directory mentioned above
- I tried looking through the executable in Ghidra and the savefile code is definitely in there somewhere, and I’ve been able to kinda make sense of some of it, but I’m not very good with disassembly / decompilation. I’d love some help with this if anyone is interested. it looks like it was probably written in C++ and I’ve found some very good places in the executable to start looking for savefile behavior but I’m baffled by a lot of what I’m seeing - I think a lot of it was automatically added by the C++ compiler
anyway I would love some advice on what to try next. I’ve tried to summarize just the most important parts of what I know about Teleglitch’s behavior, but I can explain more if anyone is interested!
