software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I try to be very careful about CWing things. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible

I sometimes post NSFW/kinky/lewd things behind CWs. this should go without saying but if you're a minor please do not interact with anything lewd/NSFW that I post

I have very limited energy and am very shy so it might take me a long time to reply to messages sometimes, or I might not be able to reply at all. this is kind of an "output only" account for the most part, but I'm hopeful that I can change that over time

I sometimes use curly braces to {clearly show where a grammatical phrase begins and ends}, like that. you can think of them like parenthesis in code or math, except they operate on grammar instead

@TheSunnyOne I would strongly recommend against installing Cheat Engine using that installer. the last time I tried (which was admittedly years ago) it ended up giving me so much malware that I had to wipe my drive and reinstall Windows from scratch

at the time I was able to find a clean installer hidden on some obscure corner of their website, but I don’t remember exactly where/how I found it, I’m not sure if it still exists, and I’m not sure if I would trust it anyway

an alternative that I’ve used is called ArtMoney which is missing all of the advanced features of Cheat Engine and is slightly more annoying to use, but it’s functional enough for basic memory-scanning

Don't suppose anybody has a clean install file for Cheat Engine?

The file from the official site gets flagged by Windows Defender because it's packed with bloatware (and if you follow the link on the site to documentation of this issue, it leads to a forum thread from 2006 where one of the devs uses the R word to describe people that have any issues with this...)

I've had to uninstall and delete my WeMod/Wand account because of their decision to add unecessary features, AI, etc, to drive people toward an exorbitant paid sub, but I'd still like to have some kind of alternative to make games more accessible.

If not Cheat Engine, then maybe some recs for an alternative?

Ok, fellow hackers, I propose a pact: That new EU age verification app thingy ... do NOT help improve it.

Don't publish findings. Don't responsibly disclose insecurities. Don't facilitate them making it bulletproof.

If personal data is directly at risk, by all means, slam their asses into the ground. GDPR them into oblivion.

But on its core functionality this needs to be, to become, and to stay, the most insecure, the most easily circumventable piece of shit code on the planet.

@celestia I actually wrote a post about this! https://cryptid.cafe/notice/B5MSdlBZZE0JmoQ0KO

I pretty much want to copy the semantics of Lua but use the macro system and syntax of Lisps. I also want to steal Fennel’s syntax for accessing the properties of a table because it’s really convenient - especially compared to the nightmare that is accessing properties on Racket data structures

(also ideally I’d want my Lisp to be as statically-analyzable as possible. I’d want to build something like Racket’s contract system pretty deep into the language so that LSPs can see those contracts and figure out if you’re calling a function incorrectly, and also provide autocomplete hints. which are two things that Lisp LSPs tend to be very bad at in my experience)

I’m getting increasingly tempted just to make my own Lisp, but I’m pretty sure that would take actual years of work and nobody would use it anyway - since it seems like the folks who like lisps are happy with the weird jank that currently exists, and the folks who don’t like lisps are not going to suddenly like my version of a lisp lol. plus popularity is a catch-22

also like, a huge part of why I like Lisps so much is because they let you essentially turn them into anything you want. like if you don’t like an aspect of the language then you can just change it completely or make your own version instead

and yet Racket is (as far as I can tell) deliberately stopping me from accessing the public fields of classes? why would you intentionally add that limitation to a language? that means I can’t fix anything. frustrating

the whole reason that I’m doing this is to fix Racket’s overly picky and verbose syntax for getting data from data structures but if Racket is just going to deliberately stop me from being able to then maybe I really should just use another language

oof so as far as I can tell Racket has no way to get a field from an object based on a variable. like in Python you can do this:

class SomeClass:
    def __init__(self):
        self.foo = 666

obj = SomeClass()
field_name = "foo"
getattr(obj, field_name) # -> 666

but as far as I can tell #Racket literally will not let you do that T_T the field name basically has to be known at compile time or it won’t work. that is actually terrible because I’m trying to make a (get) form that is able to drill down into data structures given a list of keys:

(get some-data '(2 4 hash-key obj-field))

but I think it’s literally impossible for me to make it work with objects

making fun of C

C is an esolang that is designed to be the least portable language possible. in fact a C project is only capable of compiling on the system of the person who wrote the code

it accomplishes this by having the most eldritch and non-portable compilation system imaginable, which works kind of like a bash file crossed with a Unix wizard’s nightmares

compiling C also requires plenty of external libraries which are not fetched or managed by the compilation system in any way. this forces the user to manually install the correct versions of each of them by hand

at this point compilation can begin and thousands of lines of warnings and errors will be spat out, but compilation will continue no matter the consequences. this will take a very long time. eventually compilation will fail, because the wrong compiler flags were specified, or the wrong version of a library was used, or the wrong install commands were used, or the commands were used in the wrong order, or-

i never thought about it this way but a kilocalorie is the same as a watt hour more or less... a 15a wall socket maxes out at around 3 cheeseburgers per hour. eating an apple is like eating 40 AA batteries. walking a mile burns through the equivalent of a fully charged gaming laptop battery

It's interesting cause if you look into the most popular watch styles worn by obscenely rich people in suits you'll find that a lot of them were initially intended for working professionals. Pilot and railway watches with chronographs and tachymeters, diver watches with readable indexes and rotating bezels, military watches with light, fabric straps and readable numerals..

Funny how regular, working class things can suddenly become the peak of luxury as soon as the rich catch on. Like caviar and lobsters!

Edit: correction. Railroad watches didn't typically have chronographs, they were just met railroad accuracy standards. Watches with chronographs and tachymeters were primarily used by pilots and also for racing/sports where stopwatches and speed measurements came in handy.

@pea damn you weren’t even kidding. it could just be a coincidence but it’s a little too convenient. like why that specific expression, and that specific character? either way this situation is extremely fucked

BETA DECAY

this looks unfathomably peak wtf

beta decay is a dark, dystopian RPG where you can build spaceships, join factions, and fight for territory in a newly discovered star system. Become an engineer repairing starships, a mech pilot commanding war machines, to a syndicate leader, executing raids deep within a labyrinthic neon city.

those are some huge ambitions but what’s already there looks like a game I’d love to play as-is

@smeikx I’m trying my best lol but it’s so hard to find info about how to configure anything - especially when the API keeps changing. like I can’t even get treesitter to work anymore, and if I update to 0.12 it breaks some of my plugins and I can’t figure out which ones

(to be honest though, I probably shouldn’t have been using treesitter in the first place because it’s still experimental)
