@eanakashima this is an extremely important thing to keep in mind when talking about [insert any unjust thing here]
it’s not helpful at all to say “this is fucked up”. that’s okay for venting (with a CW, of course) but it’s not going to accomplish anything other than blowing off steam
to create actual positive change you need to provide an alternative or something to do about it. because we can wallow all day in how fucked up things are, but that’s just going to emotionally exhaust everyone into fatalistic apathy. this is already happening
even people who are okay with [insert any unjust thing here] probably realize how fucked up it is. it’s just that they can’t imagine any better alternative. pointing out the flaws in [thing here] is not going to change their minds - it’s just going to make them feel attacked, which will make them even more defensive and entrenched in their beliefs
so yeah I think that this is extremely good advice: point to the way forward, not at the problems that currently exist. we are all painfully aware of what problems exist anyway. what we need are actionable goals for responding to them

People just naturally start to go toward where you draw their attention, whether they want to or not. 🤷🏻
Might as well pick something good to point at.
This lesson has many applications right now.
My greatest professional accomplishment of the year: I got my exec & manager teammates saying "point positive," a term from whitewater rafting and kayaking.
Meaning: when facing hazards, point people toward where to go/what to do, rather than drawing attention to everything to avoid.
@vampiress although I’m ngl, Metroid Prime’s UI is also fantastic
A question for you all - which VIDEO GAME has your favourite in-game interface? That means UI, controls, everything. An interface that not only feels natural and good but immerses you in the game, makes play easy, AND makes you want to keep playing. Can be from any era.
(Please boost)
@vampiress stage three of The First Alkahistorian has got to have the best UI of any game I’ve ever played. it’s able to compress so much information into such a small space. the whole game is pretty much just one big interface and it is honestly amazing how satisfying it is to use
it does have a bit of learning curve, though, unfortunately. and the pie charts are never explained by the game itself (I had to look up online what they meant) but still. absolutely amazing game with an absolutely amazing interface

@xeno ohh interesting! so I’m guessing that regular water captures neutrons by becoming deuterium D₂O - but presumably once it’s got one neutron it’s not going to be too eager to capture another one (I’m ngl I have no idea what forces cause a neutron to stay inside of a nucleus or what properties those forces have for different types of atoms or molecules lol)
I’m guessing that means that a reactor core full of deuterium D₂O is going to be more likely to have a negative void coefficient (since it moderates the neutrons, but doesn’t absorb them) than one full of regular water?
and if my assumption is right about regular water becoming deuterium Dâ‚‚O when it captures a neutron, does that mean that reactor core water needs to be periodically changed out or it will change its effects on the reaction by becoming more full of deuterium Dâ‚‚O?
He then proceeded to walk us through the entire raid. He solo-tanked the entire thing. I "helped" heal, but I can tell you the charts made it pretty clear that I was putting out a single-digit percent of what he was.
He called out all the strats in real time. (We were teachers, good at explaining things.) Most boiled down to "stack up on me, just a bit forward so my cone-AoE heals get you", but he was detailed enough that "we" one-shotted everything.
It was surreal and amazing.
And, ultimately, it led to months of chatter around the office about how epic it had been. And, in all seriousness, I think it really helped bond the group and improved our trust.
I mean, it was n=1 truly positive experience. But still, it was.

@kasdeya While I agree for the most part, I have had the occasional positive, small-group social experience.
I used to work with someone who, years before, had been in one of the top 3 progression guilds in the world. He had a full-size Frostmourne replica in his office. He'd since backed off to be a (filthy) casual, but we'd occasionally meet up in WoW for random quests.
Just before Draenor launched, I was leveling a Monk and he showed up. In chatting, wherein I mentioned I'd never gotten around to seeing Firelands from Cataclysm. He asked if I wanted to. I was dubious about pulling together a raid group, and he said don't worry about it. (LFR wasn't out yet.)
He logged onto his Paladin, took a minute to respec, and invited me and 2 other coworkers to group. They hadn't seen Firelands yet, either. We all had characters who were at a level able to enter, but none of us were geared for it. Firelands was, at that point, only 1 expansion back — you still needed a raid to tackle it.

@2something omg I remember Realm of the Mad God! I played it for a few hours when I was younger and thought it was pretty fun. it’s such a shame that it’s been ruined now though. I feel like that’s the fate of so many multiplayer games, unfortunately
@OctaviaConAmore hm I actually don’t know! I always play against bots and I get pretty overwhelmed in that game so I have no idea what my non-bot teammates are up to lol
@OctaviaConAmore oohh that’s a really good point! I’ve been enjoying playing Deadlock a lot and that might be part of it tbh
you know what? MMOs actually just suck as a social experience
older WoW expansions are fun as a singleplayer game (despite Blizzard’s best efforts), and OSRS is fun as a singleplayer game too (despite Jagex’s best efforts)
but like “hey do you want to hang out in WoW with me? you just have to grind for 10,000 hours and the whole time you’ll be learning how to pilot what might as well be a space shuttle. but after that we can actually play the game! or, actually after the 10,000 hours there’s no game left to play - it’s just infinite grinding. but we can finally grind together! also it’s $15/month”
“uhh no actually how about we play a normal multiplayer game instead”
