software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I have strong opinions about #Lisp but love S-expressions. I also have strong opinions about video games, TTRPGs, software, and programming in general and I post about them a lot

I like to use curly braces to {group words together} to make my sentences easier to parse. for example, try reading the garden path sentence "the complex houses married and single soldiers and their families", and now try reading it with curly braces: "{the complex} houses {married and single soldiers and their families}"

I try to thoroughly CW anything that I post or boost which might be triggering, or just cause strong emotions like outrage or fear. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible. I even CW when I'm {complaining about} or {making fun of} something in case you don't want to hear a stranger criticize something you love

replying to messages is very energy-intensive for me, so I may not reply to certain messages at all, or it may take me a long time. DMs are especially hard

@ghostlyash totally agreed about Wesker and it's nice to see somebody else saying it.

I've been complaining about Capcom shoehorning him in to everything since they brought him back & released Wesker's Report with CVX.

Like, he gets a total of aroubd 10 minutes of screen time in RE1 before the game actively makes fun of him and unceremoniously skewers him with either a Tyrant claw or a Chimera hook in the back. He is made to look pathetic on purpose.

Then we get three excellent games without him (RE2, RE3, RE:GS1) that manage to introduce some really cool ideas that don't revolve around Wesker.

Then they bring him back, suddenly he specifically only hates Chris, and according to Wesker's Report he's been involved in everyghing from the start.

Everybody (rightfully) talks about Leon being the Gary Stu cool-dude of the franchise, but they did it with Wesker first and it always annoyed me.

Like how originally Ada was a cool secret agent for The Organisation and had infiltrated Umbrella without them knowing, to Wesker's Report turning around and saying that actually Ada was working for Wesker all along bevause he'd secretly tricked both Umbrella and The Organisation.

His legacy throughout the series annoys me in the same way that everybody in Star Wars knows a Skywalker. It shrinks and dulls the whole thing.

@Chishiki611 aww, I can understand why. my original post was very angry and venty, because I have very strong feelings about this stuff. but I try to always direct my anger at things and ideas and never at people/sophonts, and I basically never get angry at ideas/things presented in replies since that feels pretty mean

I’d be interested to hear your question, but I may not be able to reply since believe it or not I can actually be very shy and certain things can be too difficult for me to reply to. but also it’s totally fine if you don’t want to ask, either

@desea I’m definitely not trying to sway theists with that post - in fact I really hope there aren’t any Christians who encounter it because it’s probably just going to push them further into their religion and make them feel persecuted at the same time

I really just posted this to vent and also try to explain my perspective. it was originally going to just be about why I don’t like god-worshipping in fantasy and why I find the whole thing confusing and frustrating. but I realized that it applied to reality too and it would be weird to not make that clear

but you’re right that a lot of genuinely good technology (that’s a good way to think about it) is tied up in religions and I think it’s worthwhile to try to deconstruct how they work and what positive things we can take from them

@kasdeya not even mentioning how kids are told if they don't worship musk, they'll be doomed forever. literal toddlers, too young to understand personal property or responsibility getting dragged to church and being told "you have to do this thing you really don't enjoy for 1 hour because if you don't, elon (who is really "good" and "fair" and "always" "cares" for you) will punish you eternally with the worst things you can imagine"

Never ask what the difference between a violin and a fiddle is, you won't get a straight answer.

As far as I can tell, they are functionally the same instrument. A fiddle may be constructed with folk music in mind over classical music, but mostly it's a difference in context, not in the nature of the instrument. Basically it's a fiddle if the player is wearing a cowboy hat and a violin if the player is wearing a suit jacket or a cocktail dress.

Ya'll, we need to stop misconstruing "does nothing to help you" with "gives you full control".

If I buy a computer and it comes as a spool of wire and some transistors, I don't have "full control" over my computer, I don't have a computer.

If I have to build the components and the tools from scratch, you haven't given me control, you've given me nothing. Control implies having pieces I can configure or knobs to adjust, not having to make the controls myself just to have anything at all.

@Shivaekul I really like that tbh

I always found Pascal’s Wager kinda funny because there are infinite possible things that a god could reward or punish. they could hate people who eat peanut butter and only reward people who bathe in kiwi juice on Mondays

but definitely any god worth worshiping would be doing their absolute best 24/7 to make life as good for as many people as possible, and it’s hard to believe that with the world as it is, like you said

imagine if people discovered that if you built a shrine in Elon Musk’s name, and sung songs about how perfect he is, and devoted your entire life to stroking his ego, that he would sometimes do favors for you if you asked him with enough deference and respect

but the favors aren’t the point. the point is worshiping him because of how perfect and good he is. he’s just so amazing that everyone needs to devote their lives to telling him that as often as possible. it’s also to avoid his wrath, because he doesn’t appreciate when people stop praising him or praise him incorrectly. he’s a jealous god but he’s a good god, because sometimes he does good things if you beg him for it

sure he has a fuckton of wealth and power that he could be sharing freely with everyone, but he probably has some inscrutably wise reason to hoard it all for himself and only hand out tiny little favors instead. he is perfect and good after all

that’s how I feel about the concept of worshiping any god, in fantasy or reality
