software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I have strong opinions about #Lisp but love S-expressions. I also have strong opinions about video games, TTRPGs, software, and programming in general and I post about them a lot

I like to use curly braces to {group words together} to make my sentences easier to parse. for example, try reading the garden path sentence "the complex houses married and single soldiers and their families", and now try reading it with curly braces: "{the complex} houses {married and single soldiers and their families}"

I try to thoroughly CW anything that I post or boost which might be triggering, or just cause strong emotions like outrage or fear. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible. I even CW when I'm {complaining about} or {making fun of} something in case you don't want to hear a stranger criticize something you love

replying to messages is very energy-intensive for me, so I may not reply to certain messages at all, or it may take me a long time. DMs are especially hard

playing ARR is like watching Naruto at 0.1x speed except every time there’s a filler episode you have to watch it 4 times in a row

Square Enix should let you skip all of ARR for free if you send them an angry enough email

@fargate I have! I don’t like FFXIV as a game on its own but I discovered that it’s a good way to connect with my partners who play the game and it’s enjoyable enough to have a shared virtual world with them and to do duties together

also I found a few things that I like! like the design of the rogue quests (though maybe not the idea that they’re basically cop-assassins, and the head of the guild is an ass) and the fact that they speak in thieves’ cant is pretty cool too. and pretty much all of the worldbuilding in Southern Thanalan is great honestly. I loved helping the refugees and I love that there’s a tribe of hot catgirls who hunt dune worms

to be honest though I’ve totally checked out for the MSQ lol. sometimes I’ll read a little bit of dialog and then be like “yeah I’m making the right choice by skipping past this”. so I have no idea what the post-ARR story is

also it would be great to do FFXIV stuff with you at some point! I don’t think I’m brave enough to do that for now T_T but I hope I can get to that point eventually

@agatha aw that’s fair! I don’t know much about the Final Fantasy games. I skimmed over the Summoner’s and Arcanist’s abilities and they don’t seem like something that I’d be interested in, but once I get to Heavensward I definitely want to try Dark Knight and Machinist. I’ve heard really good things about the Dark Knight questline, although I’m not sure if I’ll like it personally hehe

@fargate I did manage to get past the 2.0 part of ARR! so I just need to reach Heavensward and I definitely want to try Dark Knight. I also want to try Machinist since guns are cool lol

from what I’ve heard of Dark Knight it seems interesting! odds are I won’t like the story but I’m interested by how it (I’ve heard) explores how your character just kinda goes along with what everyone tells them to do lol

It looks like the ⍼ saga has finally ended!

The unicode character '⍼' was a mystery first noticed in 2022: https://ionathan.ch/2022/04/09/angzarr.html. It's in the Unicode standard as a mathematical symbol. But no one could find any examples of it having been used, and no one knew what it represented. It was like the only record of an extinct species, fossilized in the Unicode standard.

But now someone has found the document it originally came from! It represents the angle 'Azimuth', and the symbol probably comes from the path light takes through a sextant. https://ionathan.ch/2026/02/16/angzarr.html

(@johncarlosbaez might appreciate this symbol!)

concept : stickerbombed robot

a bot sitting in public absolutely covered in various stickers

( it is considering paying someone to draw it like that , but also that must be an utter pain in the ass to draw.. @ artists? :) )

Your regular reminder that "the rich" aren't people who earn large paychecks. They are people with capital that generates returns: investments, property, company shares. "High income earners" are not an intrinsic enemy of "the working class" – many of them are a member of it!

Haven't posted here in a while. Somehow Twitter is the only platform where I regularly get replies. I know, that sucks.
I'm still trying out my f-machine with various toys and settings.

the ninja class is an edgy assassin and they unlock ninjutsus which are magic abilities that they can use by making Naruto hand signs in battle.

wanna know what the ninjutsus are? that’s right! elemental magic

this might be a hot take but elemental magic is the most boring type of magic to me. like oh you can throw fireballs? that must’ve been so cool back in 1974. you can shoot a concentrated blast of ice? that’s literally just a reskinned fireball. you can shoot lightning? that’s also a reskinned fireball

I’m an edgy girl and I like edgy magic like corrupting people’s souls, summoning demons, dissolving into the shadows, etc.

so imagine my disappointment when I picked up Thaumaturge - an edgy magic class in FFXIV - and literally all of their abilities are elemental magic, just like every other magic class in the game

Watched some more Dark Shadows yesterday night and just can't get that one gaffe out of my head.

A character said "microphone" instead of "microscope" in a sentence.

Then, a few scenes later, he came in so HOT saying "microscope" that you could tell he knew he'd fucked up earlier😆

you’re writing some code! do you want other people to be able to use it besides just you?

no: great! this will be fun

@mxchara omg I’ve never heard of Dylan! it seems interesting though - especially since it seems heavily inspired by Lisp but the syntax doesn’t look Lisp-like at all

@fargate ooh! I’m glad that there’s a language where this is possible, and in a way that seems simple to me too (at least in terms of the type annotations)
