this might be a hot take but elemental magic is the most boring type of magic to me. like oh you can throw fireballs? that must’ve been so cool back in 1974. you can shoot a concentrated blast of ice? that’s literally just a reskinned fireball. you can shoot lightning? that’s also a reskinned fireball
I’m an edgy girl and I like edgy magic like corrupting people’s souls, summoning demons, dissolving into the shadows, etc.
so imagine my disappointment when I picked up Thaumaturge - an edgy magic class in FFXIV - and literally all of their abilities are elemental magic, just like every other magic class in the game
the ninja class is an edgy assassin and they unlock ninjutsus which are magic abilities that they can use by making Naruto hand signs in battle.
wanna know what the ninjutsus are? that’s right! elemental magic
@kasdeya takes more creative game design to do non-elemental magic. Easier to just slap a flavor on a project or AoE elemental attack
@kasdeya Yeah, the edgy shadow-and-corruption jobs come later. Dark Knight is in Heavensward main hub after the whole of A Realm Reborn, while Reaper needs lvl 70 to unlock. Both are a pretty tall order to slog into if not feeling it. I've been putting both off as they don't hit the vibe of my WoL OC, but I hear especially Dark Knight has an extremely edgy journal to go with the themes and job quests.
@kasdeya isn't summoner more your style then? final fantasy's black magic was always more of an elemental thing
@fargate I did manage to get past the 2.0 part of ARR! so I just need to reach Heavensward and I definitely want to try Dark Knight. I also want to try Machinist since guns are cool lol
from what I’ve heard of Dark Knight it seems interesting! odds are I won’t like the story but I’m interested by how it (I’ve heard) explores how your character just kinda goes along with what everyone tells them to do lol
@agatha aw that’s fair! I don’t know much about the Final Fantasy games. I skimmed over the Summoner’s and Arcanist’s abilities and they don’t seem like something that I’d be interested in, but once I get to Heavensward I definitely want to try Dark Knight and Machinist. I’ve heard really good things about the Dark Knight questline, although I’m not sure if I’ll like it personally hehe
@kasdeya enjoy, modern ffxiv has no more job quests
@kasdeya Oh, you have returned to Eorzea? I must've missed the news. Post-ARR (2.1 ->) is... certainly an arc. But I'll hope you have a good one!
I assume you are on NA servers, so it'd take extra steps to run dungeons with you as an EU player, but let me know if you wanna meet up on OCE for whatever occasion!
@kasdeya when you get more used to the jobs at a high level, they are more about a specific mechanic and less about the specifics
black mage is an extremely high damage job with low mobility, summoner is faster, it focus on summoning increasingly powerful creatures etc.
@fargate I have! I don’t like FFXIV as a game on its own but I discovered that it’s a good way to connect with my partners who play the game and it’s enjoyable enough to have a shared virtual world with them and to do duties together
also I found a few things that I like! like the design of the rogue quests (though maybe not the idea that they’re basically cop-assassins, and the head of the guild is an ass) and the fact that they speak in thieves’ cant is pretty cool too. and pretty much all of the worldbuilding in Southern Thanalan is great honestly. I loved helping the refugees and I love that there’s a tribe of hot catgirls who hunt dune worms
to be honest though I’ve totally checked out for the MSQ lol. sometimes I’ll read a little bit of dialog and then be like “yeah I’m making the right choice by skipping past this”. so I have no idea what the post-ARR story is
also it would be great to do FFXIV stuff with you at some point! I don’t think I’m brave enough to do that for now T_T but I hope I can get to that point eventually
Square Enix should let you skip all of ARR for free if you send them an angry enough email
playing ARR is like watching Naruto at 0.1x speed except every time there’s a filler episode you have to watch it 4 times in a row
@kasdeya Yeah, ARR is the primary reason I don’t recommend this game to people. It’s dog slow and ultimately irrelevant. Also hate that they gate access to other places based on how far you are in the story, which is terrible for crafters/gatherers stuck in ARR or an expansion.
