software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I have strong opinions about #Lisp but love S-expressions. I also have strong opinions about video games, TTRPGs, software, and programming in general and I post about them a lot

I like to use curly braces to {group words together} to make my sentences easier to parse. for example, try reading the garden path sentence "the complex houses married and single soldiers and their families", and now try reading it with curly braces: "{the complex} houses {married and single soldiers and their families}"

I try to thoroughly CW anything that I post or boost which might be triggering, or just cause strong emotions like outrage or fear. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible. I even CW when I'm {complaining about} or {making fun of} something in case you don't want to hear a stranger criticize something you love

replying to messages is very energy-intensive for me, so I may not reply to certain messages at all, or it may take me a long time. DMs are especially hard

@celestia ooh thank you for the advice, and for the Noel Berry post! it’s great to know about imgui, and also this post has me pretty hopeful that I can make games in an environment that doesn’t absolutely suck, and that that isn’t even a terrible idea lol

@celestia ooh raylib sounds like exactly what I’d want! and it even has Python bindings. thanks for mentioning it!

@ninafelwitch omg really? I could try to explain them if you’re interested! but it’s okay if not

@hearts oh really? that’s interesting. I’m not sure if I see the connection - I guess you’re kind of managing your crops in a way

I think the problems that I have with strategy games and management games are mostly that I don’t get clear immediate feedback from the game on whether I’m doing well or not, so I tend to stew in anxiety and self-doubt lol

but with farming games it’s much easier to know if I’m doing well because I know that my crops will always sell for more than I bought the seeds for, and I don’t have any living expenses or other things to pay for in the meantime that might cause a game over. so it’s basically impossible to make a decision so wrong that you lose the game

@hearts oh - interesting! how so? I guess I could see how it’s similar to a strategy game, since you’re choosing a long-term goal (harvesting a certain crop) and then working towards it every day

@hearts I think I get the appeal! I’ve only tried Stardew Valley, which I have very mixed feelings on, but the farming parts were kinda nice tbh - and I especially liked clearing away the weeds and rocks from my farm

but I think the farming part makes sense too: it’s kind of an incremental game where you farm X crops and sell them so you can buy X*2 seeds and sell X*2 crops and repeat. it’s probably pretty satisfying to watch your farm grow like that

a few weeks ago I joined a WoW Legion private server and I’m currently trying to figure out if I’m bored of WoW in general or if Legion is an especially bad expansion for me. I made a rogue and it really felt like a lot of the satisfaction of the rogue’s abilities was gone or at least muted, and I’m not sure exactly why - although Eviscerate doing noticeably less damage is probably at least part of it

I might try a WotLK private server next. I feel like the closer I get to vanilla, the better the class fantasy gets - at the cost of things being a lot less convenient (class trainers, limited ammo, etc.)

they should have a checkbox when you make a FFXIV character that says “I don’t actually like this game I just want to spend time with my friends” and if you check that it lets you auto sync your progress to your friends’ progress so you can join them in their adventures without having to grind solo for 300 years first

I can’t believe Deadlock is actually fun. I was starting to think that Paladins would be the only hero shooter that I’d ever like but I think Deadlock might actually be even better

also Vindicta’s mechanics are a little bit gender

this especially sucks when those I’m close to like a game that I don’t. like as far as I’m concerned FFXIV is a game where you press 1 2 1 3 1 3 1 3 1 3 1 3 at enemies but some of my partners really really like it and I wish I could enjoy it enough to play with them - especially after seeing how much joy they get out of playing it

there are certain game genres that I’m pretty sure I will never understand the appeal of:

  • strategy games
  • management games
  • most RPGs - especially JRPGs
  • fighting games

and as someone with a special interest in video games it feels kinda bad to simply not understand these games. but oh well - everything can’t appeal to me lol, and I think there are certain emotional wants/needs that are served by video games that I just don’t have and can’t relate to

@wakame hehehe! interesting omg. I think there are just some types of games that I might never understand, and that is definitely one of them. but I’m glad that people are able to find TTRPG systems that they like - and that that niche is served

@celestia ohh that makes a ton of sense! before I started learning Unity I was playing with a fantasy console called Pyxel and I actually had a lot of fun with that - because I was kinda making a lot of my own game engine parts and treating Pyxel as more of a “draw stuff to the screen” system lol

what technologies do you use for your games? I’m kinda curious now. maybe once I get over my Unity-induced… burnout? then I can experiment with simpler game dev stuff again

@celestia it’s amazing that you feel that way! and I’m really glad that there are folks like you out there who are able to overall enjoy making games tbh. I could never do it - even just trying to learn Unity fucked me up pretty good and I’m still recovering lol

“instead of confidently solving interesting problems with code you’ll be haphazardly gluing together a bunch of systems that are too complex for you to ever understand” is also a perfect description of why I hate any form of system administration or containerization

I have so much respect for the people who are willing to put themselves through this hell in order to make a game for random people like me to play. I do not understand what kind of insanity would possess someone to inflict this on themself but I appreciate their sacrifice

do you love programming and video games? want to hate them instead? you should try game dev! instead of confidently solving interesting problems with code you’ll be haphazardly gluing together a bunch of systems that are too complex for you to ever understand! it’s like trying to fix a nuclear sub while blindfolded! if you’ve ever wanted to hate computers and yourself you should definitely try game dev
