i have updated the block game site's FAQ with important new information
huge shoutout to CurseForge for keeping every version of every WoW addon and letting you sort by which WoW version they’re compatible with. AFAICT there is Absolutely No Reason why this would be helpful for a retail WoW player but it is a lifesaver for private server players like me
if I could make games I would make a game that does everything I love about WoW but better. it wouldn’t be hard because WoW is only accidentally doing most of the things that I love about it
@Shivaekul oohh I’m really glad that they did. I love a lot of what they did in more recent WoW expensions tbh - like level scaling is something that I have wanted for so long T_T trying to play multiplayer when you’re not at the level cap and there’s no level scaling sucks so much for my playstyle - it effectively means I have to consciously keep my character’s level in line with all of my friends’ at all times or playing with them is going to be Extremely Unfun
thankfully my private server has Legion which (I think?) finally added this
but yeah I want more games where I pick a class that has a very evocative fantasy associated with it and then the game facilitates that class fantasy with all of its mechanics. like even one game that does that other than WoW would be great
okay I’m actually going to try something different this time. I deleted every character until I only had Alliance characters, and only one character per class (the highest-level character) and I’m going to see if I can figure them out instead of making new characters. I’m going to pretend that professions don’t exist for now but I might deal with that later because at the moment I just want to focus on figuring out combat again and getting all of my combat-related addons set up
any time I play a non-WoW MMO it feels to me like they completely missed the point of what makes a WoW-style MMO fun in the first place and just did random confusing things instead. but I think what’s really happened is that they’ve catered the MMO to every player’s taste except mine because I’m the only one who likes WoW as a singleplayer class fantasy crafting-and-combat experience
I don’t think even Blizzard could understand why I love this game or what I get out of playing it. there is no other MMO in the world that caters to my taste and I’m increasingly suspecting that WoW caters to my taste so well completely by accident
I think at the very least, all WoW characters on the same faction should have a shared bank and a shared gold pool. that would help a lot. like, an enormous amount
I’ve been getting back into my private WoW server lately (I do this about once per year for 2 weeks and then get bored again lol) and it’s reminding me why I always delete all of my characters and start from scratch: WoW characters are extremely fucking complicated and there’s no way to take notes that are stored on the server about how to play them or what I was doing with them, or really anything about them at all
which character was my auction house character? why is my character in this zone in particular? what items are stored in which character’s bank and why? how do I make sense of the enormous complexity of their abilities? etc. it’s way easier to just start from scratch than figure out wtf was going on with each one
so yeah I have about 10 characters and I’m going to delete all of them and start from scratch. I feel like the average WoW player would be screaming at me right now lol but genuinely, it’s this or not play the game at all
@Shivaekul oohh… I might give this a read - thank you for the recommendation! it definitely sounds promising
Here’s a three month old screenshot of a tweet that tickled me
dystopian fiction doesn’t work because no matter how much you confront the average person with the flaws in our current system, they still won’t understand that alternative systems are possible or what those would look like, so they either descend into doomerism about it or learn how to turn off their empathy for others
we need fiction with a proactive message - like fiction that juxtaposes two societies, one better than the other - or fiction that shows how to fight for a better world and how/why that works. or hell how about you just show people a society that they would prefer to live in and show them how it’s possible to create that
but you can’t just be like “capitalism bad” because everybody already knows that homeless people and starvation exist
also they taught me that if I ever try to analyze a piece of art I will be subjected to extreme criticism and scrutiny so it’s better to just never engage with art beyond the surface level
the best way to teach kids anything is to take away all of their rights and herd them like cattle in a heavily oppressive authoritarian system where their every movement and action is monitored and controlled and they have no choice over what subjects they learn or engage with or even how they learn or engage with those things. also their knowledge is repeatedly tested and monitored in a high-stress high-stakes environment so that they can be shamed over and over for their lack of understanding

me, flashing back to The Canterbury Tales: never speak to me again
my high school classes may not have taught me anything of value whatsoever but they did give me a lifelong deep-seated hatred for the entire field of math, the English language, symbolism, poetry, the entire field of literary analysis, anything considered “high art”, and anything involving American history
