software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I try to be very careful about CWing things. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible

I sometimes post NSFW/kinky/lewd things behind CWs

I have very limited energy and am very shy so it might take me a long time to reply to messages sometimes, or I might not be able to reply at all. this is kind of an "output only" account for the most part, but I'm hopeful that I can change that over time

I sometimes use curly braces to {clearly show where a grammatical phrase begins and ends}, like that. you can think of them like parenthesis in code or math, except they operate on grammar instead

if you see me mention #GAGSProject that's this: https://cryptid.cafe/notice/AxJRZIJ0k4hAXnDCsq

I should never be required to touch servers or even acknowledge their existence. I should live in an ideal world where I write code to solve interesting problems in exchange for money and somebody else figures out how to machete their way through the vine-choked hosting jungles so that my code can run on something

omg I need to update the DNS address of my resume website (it went up from $2/year to $32/year) and I literally can not figure out what is hosting it? I thought it was GitLab Pages but it’s not. it’s definitely something else. I set this up almost exactly 365 days ago and I have no idea what 2024 kas did

how do server people remember this stuff? do they just take really detailed notes?

How I defeated node_modules with the power of love

Chapter 1, the power of love.

The first step of my journey was realising that it is impossible to defeat node_modules with the power of love.

Chapter 2, the power of incredible violence

The most important thing I can tell you about writing or any other creative pursuit is this:

Give yourself permission to do it and don't worry about being "good" at it.

Life is short. Creativity is joyful. Just do it! Have fun. Muck about.

If you stick it out, you can get good at it over time, if that's important to you — but it doesn't have to be.

You can just play with creativity for the pure joy of it, too.

If it brings you joy, do it.

@revoluciana @kimlockhartga Tolkien himself thought about this and regretted his portrayal of the orcs in the end:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolkien%27s_moral_dilemma

The entire idea of "racial alignments" is subconsciously satisfying to imperial/colonist cultures because it echoes the same colonialist mythos that justifies living on/benefiting from stolen land. Once you see it, it's super uncomfortable, and since it caught on so broadly, it's everywhere.

Why is it okay to sneak up on and preemptively execute Ganon's minions in Breath of the Wild? "They're invaders, and evil, right?" Well, that's the Hylian story. But they clearly have cultures (no coincidence borrowing aesthetics from real human cultures considered "primitive" and colonized in the real world). Several areas of the world are even pretty clearly their homelands, whatever we might claim about central Hyrule. It's okay to show up and murder them all with no warning because "they'd attack me without warning if they saw me first?" Okay, but you're a known serial killer who stalks and kills on sight, of course they'd attack you. That logic works both ways.

The parallels with the Pope declaring all regions not in Europe okay to colonize because they were only inhabited by "infidels" and "pagans" (who were okay to enslave, even) are strong.

#Doom (1993) is an action RPG

(not really, but it owes a surprising amount of its design to very old dungeon-crawler RPGs)

for anyone who thinks that this character is not sexualized, and that I’m the one sexualizing her, here’s the dev’s description of their own game:

Expect some revealing outfits, occasional mildly erotic animations, and some infrequent innuendo in conversation, with implicit undercurrents of sadism and masochism.

Fennel is absolutely meant to be thirsted after

I love alt text because when someone is making a reference that I don’t get I can literally just read their alt text and get the reference

also when someone posts a screenshot of something and I don’t know what I’m looking at, I can read the alt text and understand not just what I’m looking at but the context and implications behind it

there are so many posts that I would’ve never understood otherwise, or would have had to go out of my way to google stuff to figure out what they’re referencing, where instead I just get to immediately understand

@gsuberland The only thing I like about SD cards is that through some sort of wizardry, really dumb microcontrollers can talk to them over serial communication and access their files. You don't even have to buy a fancy interface. You can literally just solder header pins onto an SD to Micro SD adapter.

Are you upset when small vendors selling 18+ content (games, comics etc) get shut out of platforms because of pressure from payment processors?

Are you Canadian?

Bardish Chagger, MP for Waterloo, is running a petition against "financial discrimination by payment platforms against legal goods and services". This is not a normal petition, if it passes it means she gets to force a debate in parliament. You'll have to give a phone# and confirm your email. Deadline Oct 25.

@isthereanydeal if y’all like climbing games or tense horror games I highly recommend checking out the demo for White Knuckle

also Creeper World 4 looks like a complicated strategy game but it’s actually a satisfying meditative game about cleaning up purple goop called creeper using tower defense turrets

if you like the original Doom and don’t mind doing a little tinkering to get things running, try Brutal Doom, Hideous Destructor, and Outback Anarchy. also if you like the original Zelda 1 there’s a total conversion mod for GZDoom called Legend of Doom which turns it into first-person Zelda 1

if you want some calming, satisfying, wholesome puzzles try Wilmot Works It Out and A Little to the Left

if you liked Deadspace or Alien: Isolation or especially if you like immersive sim games, try Spirits of Xanadu

if you’re really nerdy about guns or just want to try a weird experimental shooter try Receiver 2. and if you want something less technical and more tense, unsettling, and exciting than Receiver 2, try HOLE

if you want to roleplay as a 90’s movie hacker, try Uplink

if you’re interested in a really weird, innovative, vaguely horror-themed cave exploration game, try Scanner Sombre

if you like puzzle games or are just interested in linguistics, I highly recommend Chants of Sennaar

if you want a tense slow-paced horror-themed space salvage simulator, give Duskers a try
