software tinkerer and aspiring rationalist. transhumanist and alterhuman

I try to be very careful about CWing things. sometimes I make mistakes but I want to make my posts as safe to read as possible

I sometimes post NSFW/kinky/lewd things behind CWs. this should go without saying but if you're a minor please do not interact with anything lewd/NSFW that I post

I have very limited energy and am very shy so it might take me a long time to reply to messages sometimes, or I might not be able to reply at all. this is kind of an "output only" account for the most part, but I'm hopeful that I can change that over time

I sometimes use curly braces to {clearly show where a grammatical phrase begins and ends}, like that. you can think of them like parenthesis in code or math, except they operate on grammar instead

advertisers have trained us that the correct response to “I love that this object exists” is “I must buy and own this object forever in order to express my love for it”. I’m talking about themed merch, funko pops, LEGO sets, airsoft guns, and other toy-like items that are often aimed at adults

but what I’d like to posit here is that advertisers have trained us to conflate “I want to experience and use this object for some period of time” with “I want to permanently own this object”

because, consider this: for how long will you enjoy this new toy? of course you’ll probably love getting to experience it at first, but that joy will fade over time, right? maybe not for all things, but for most things

for example I love assembling a new LEGO set, and I love playing with the LEGO set afterward. sometimes I’ll disassemble the whole set just to build it again. but after about 2 weeks I’m bored of the whole thing, and get no further benefit from it. our consumerist programming tells us that the correct response to this is to put it in deep storage and own it forever, where it will just take up space and be forgotten

but what if, instead, you swapped LEGO sets with someone else? now you both have a new LEGO set to play with for free, and you both get to enjoy building them and playing with them all over again. or what if you traded a LEGO set for a funko pop that you liked? and then when you were bored of admiring the funko pop you traded it for a book, and then when you were done reading the book you traded it for another LEGO set

just think of how many sales you’ve just denied our corporate overlords by doing this, and yet the joy you feel is the same

pass on your things. spread the joy to others. consume less and share more

Just a small PSA: Medical establishment notwithstanding, you do not need to Be Trans in order to try cross-sex hormone replacement therapy. If you're curious you can just try it and see how it makes you feel. You have a month or two before any permanent changes happen. (And if you're like me, it will not take that long to decide if you like it. It might not take more than a single dose.) Being able to do this is a critical expression of bodily autonomy.

Now, the medical establishment will gatekeep this from you because it's deeply transphobic and treats anything resembling medical transition as a dangerous last-resort at best and an unacceptable evil at worst. But again, it's a fundamental expression of bodily autonomy. Do not feel bad about exercising this if it's something you want to do. Even if you're just curious.

gender, HRT, the policing of bodies, definitely Boost this one
Show content

We treat our default settings as sacred.

HRT for trans people is a good example, but crucially, it shows an issue that everyone potentially faces.

A cis woman should have as much control over her hormones as a trans woman. Maybe she has painful periods. Maybe she doesn't want to be pregnant. Maybe she wants bigger boobs. Whatever.

"this may alter your body". Get fucked.

"what if you change your mind later". Get fucked.

"this may make you less fertile". Get fucked.

Many cis women I know heard, when they complained about pain or other health issues related to their sex and their reproductive organs, that they could simply get pregnant. Usually a male doctor told them that.

If getting pregnant will lessen a symptom, that means it's probably a question of hormone levels. It's insane that we treat "produce an entire human being inside you from scratch" as a solution to women's inconvenience or pain or discomfort.

Just take Progesterone. Or whatever else your body needs.

Yes, I said "needs".

Hormones are so cheap to produce they're basically free. There is no reason to not tweak our sex hormone levels. The range in which a body operates healthily is HUGE. Sex hormones raise like a hundredfold during a pregnancy. The AFAB body can handle taking hormones. It doesn't need or have to be an emergency. You don't need to be menopausal.

What the fuck am I talking about. Taking E to lessen the symptoms of menopause IS something doctors look at with suspicion.

We treat our bodies as sacred in the worst possible way.

Bodily autonomy means FULL bodily autonomy. Our hormones should be ours to decide.

We shouldn't sometimes allow for hormonal injection or pills when we actually need to, with furtive embarrassment. That is not bodily autonomy. That is medical oppression.

Trans people are so hated by the right because we lay bare the indisputable fact that the human body is mutable. It's flexible. It can be a little DIY project. It has optional software.

It goes for all bodily modifications by the way. Tattoos? Piercing? A boob job? Liposuction? Hair removal? Plastic surgery?

Cis people, especially cis women, deserve the freedom that we as trans women demand for ourselves. It's not up for debate. But it's the reason trans people are a threat.

We show what is possible. And that is not a Good Thing under patriarchy. A woman's role is to be shamed for having a body while denying her opportunities to modify it. Then blaming her for being the way she is, and selling her half measures to make herself acceptable. It's set up this way very deliberately.

Tell me I'm wrong, lol.

new power item discovered: theobromine. the stuff in cocoa that gives you energy that isn’t caffeine

I hate dark chocolate, but I tried eating a little of it regularly for a while to see if it did anything like it does for others. unsurprisingly, it never had any effect on me, no food ever does, I need much higher than normal doses of anything to feel any effect whatsoever

but you can get theobromine in 400mg capsules, and over the past week, these things have seemed to give me just enough of an energy and alertness boost to make a noticeable improvement to my mood and motivation, and with zero downsides. unlike caffeine where I get no energy and all the downsides. the effects have also lasted far longer than caffeine ever did, even when it used to work on me

if this result stays consistent for the next two weeks, this will probably be the third best thing in my cabinet behind only vitamin D and magnesium. it’s not even expensive

PSA: for anyone who is troubleshooting their Windows 11 randomly switching to light mode every time they try to change it back to dark mode, that’s a bug in PowerToys:

github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/issues/42386#issuecomment-3411381380

you need to disable a new feature called Light Switch which they accidentally enabled by default

shock collars
Show content

hey, does anyone know of any projects similar to openshock.org or pishock? I'm wondering if there are any other open source solutions for shock collar control

also, does anyone have any good resources on things like safety & shit for shock collars? I know I see some things that say not to use shock collars on your neck, however I know that people have done that without issue, so I'm wondering if there are any resources that explain the safety limits for smth like that

This time, we're headed off the topic of Oblivion and onto...oh, the effects of one of the Daedric princes of Oblivion on Tamrielic goings-on? axolotl_shock drgn_laugh_sweat

Succubard Gently Reads: [The Brothers of Darkness]

Yup, it's the dark brotherhood, a group that stems from an earlier group who was born of a worship for Mephala cat_giggle The Dark Brotherhood quest-line is, as I hear it, a lot of people's favourites when it comes to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, from the way it's introduced to how it plays out, and it's often used as a barometer to measure other quest-lines up against, both in Oblivion and in other TES games.

Hopefully, you enjoy getting a bit of a look into the history of the organisation~ frog_blush

Mildly spicy web advertising takes

* 468x60 static non-animated non-tracking banners for cool webcomics and weird hobby blogs are brilliant and only the most tedious of people have any problem with them at all

* blog writers and webcomic artists getting paid a couple bucks here and there for running non-intrusive ads is Good Actually

* the shittiness of web ads scales exponentially in accordance with how much money you're trying to make off them - if you want a few extra quid each month for pizza and beer money, web ads are great and useful to everyone, that's the perfect use case; if you want more money than that then ads are the wrong tool for the job, and you can in fact use the wrong tool wrong enough to destroy democracy

Edit: one more

* the fact that my adblocker will look at a 468x60 non-animated non-intrusive non-spyware banner ad for a gay webcomic and go "ah yes, this can go in the same hole as this 50 megabyte video ad for a toothbrush you bought last week, loaded with so much spyware javascript that your processor fan roars like a jet engine," by DEFAULT, is... honestly tragic. These are Different Things but, remember the most tedious people in the world I mentioned above? They made the adblocker

LB: remembered that I'm giving away advertising space for free PURELY BECAUSE THE WORST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD WANT TO CHARGE LOADS OF MONEY FOR IT, please give me your 468x60 pixel non-animated banner for your hobby website or small (small!) business.

Make it colourful and cool looking like something that someone would want to click. I'm not going to put it over content or move stuff around just as someone's moving their finger to tap on something or any of that bullshit, I'm not going to TRICK people into clicking it accidentally, so if you want anyone to click on it then it has to be Actually Enticing. Put it in https://www.improbableisland.com/hobbysites.php and tell your webring.

EDIT: expand this thread for examples of good ads, cool/interesting replies and some of the most incredibly niche websites you've ever seen

whenever I try to read Math Things it’s always super cryptic and using normal words in vague and esoteric ways like “an algebra is a set of values, a set of operators that it is closed under and some laws it must obey” and I’m just like, okay I don’t know what most of those words are supposed to mean and I can’t google them but I at least know what an operator is and what a value is so I think I get the gist? “an algebra is when there are values and operators and laws are involved somehow”
