I keep getting pushback on this but I'm gonna to keep saying it: We're NEVER going to free people from the clutches of Big Tech until we realize & respect that most computer users by far aren't actually computer users.

They don't give a shit about computers. They don't want to see a single line of code, ever.

They don't care about customization, "distros" or versions. They don't care about GUIs or desktop environments.

I went to a #NoKings gathering today. There were several democrat officials speaking, and the crowd was receptive to them but got bored when they started talking about California prop 50 and other partisan stuff. The crowd was louder and more receptive to calls of fighting fascism. The speakers did their usual self-agrandizement thanking the democratic party for social security and other stuff from before my grandparents were born. I was surprised by how many people my age in the crowd liked those statements. The older people were less impressed.

There was one speaker who is an activist working to rescue and hide people from ice. He was much more interesting and the crowd liked him a lot more than the old democrats. He knew how to hold a mic, speak loud, and pace himself with the energy of the crowd. He also knew how to speak in a way that touched on the anger against ice without saying anything that could be construed as calling for violence.

I think my takeaways are that people who are in the streets want to do something and make change now and not wait until they get to vote. Anyone who can give them a truly immediate call to action will get good results. Also, if you want to get into a public speaking sort of job, spend some time practicing with a microphone and speaking with your full dynamic range.
