modern websites: please stop overriding default browser behaviors

@rowan the fact that they can do this at all drives me up a fucking wall. I feel like in 2035 I’ll try to close a tab and it’ll be like “sorry! it costs 25 PlayCoins™ to exit this site!”

trying to navigate code on github is a nightmare

  • back, forward, page up, page down, home, and end all do nothing
    • pressing “back” actually changes the url, but the page doesn’t visibly change
  • ctrl-f sometimes opens the browser’s find, but sometimes it opens github’s garbage symbol search or whatever its called
  • pressing / jumps to the top of the page and focuses the search bar

@kasdeya i'm not sure if i hate that more or less than the redirect trap where going back sends you into a redirect that sends you right back to the page you're trying to leave

@rowan @kasdeya oh that one's not even just modern sites - anything that issues a redirect can do that if you're not careful, and we remember seeing it more in the past
