“it’s just as easy to learn to use Linux as it is to learn to use Windows”
are you fucking serious. I absolutely hate when FOSS people try to sell FOSS stuff as “easy to learn” like this; it drives me absolutely crazy. and then when anyone has trouble with Linux it’s their fault for “expecting it to be like Windows” or “using it wrong” or “not reading the docs” (as they link to a webpage that is incomprehensible to someone who isn’t steeped in Linux lore) or whatever other excuse they can come up with to blame the user instead of the arcane system they’re trying to work with
I’m willing to bet that this exact attitude is a big part of why so many people bounce off of Linux. Linux people need to be honest and say “listen, you’re going to need to learn a series of ugly hacks and weird esoteric technical stuff to get your system running, and updates might randomly break things that you’re relying on which will require you to learn even more weird esoteric technical stuff in order to fix it. it’s going to feel like you’re working on a 1970’s Unix mainframe a lot of the time. and that’s assuming that your hardware is even supported by the OS. but at least it isn’t Windows with its spyware and adware and slow enshittification”
now people know what they’re getting into and can make an informed decision instead of being led to believe that it’s easy, and then blamed when it turns out it isn’t
kas getting increasingly defensive about not switching to Linux as the end-of-support date for Windows 10 approaches and she has to make a terrible choice between Windows 11 and the OS she’s bounced off of more times than she can count (I still really want to be able to play games, too T_T and don’t even try to tell me that Linux is good for playing games now)
@kasdeya the world if foss evangelists would put any of that energy into making linux usable by regular users, instead of complaining they're doing things wrong
@kasdeya i'm currently making the jump to Linux for the same reasons 💀 i am mildly regretful, but arguably i'm doing this on hard mode by following a friend's recommendation to try NixOS...
@liese oh noo omg everything I’ve seen about NixOS has made it seem like… yeah Linux on hard mode lol. like learning a system that’s already highly complex, while also managing several more highly complex systems and all of their interactions with each other. but I hope that it goes well for you!
@kasdeya i'm honestly thinking of switching to Arch Linux of all things 💀 but i promise it makes sense: i want to know what tf is going on at every level, if i can, and Arch is kind of made for that experience?? while NixOS wants you to learn a whole *new* abstraction on top of requiring me to throw out some undetermined amount of stuff i already thought i kinda-sorta knew
thanks for the well-wishes 😅🫠 gonna stick it out for a bit longer and see if anything gels
