as much as I dislike their gameplay and game design philosophies, I have to admit that Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal really know how to play into a power fantasy through cutscenes, storytelling, and worldbuilding. honestly I think any other series would be afraid of being too transparently wish-fulfill-y if they did something like this. and I think that’s such a shame because video games are one of the best media for wish fulfillment (IMO, anyway)

I’ve heard that Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal borrow a lot of their combat design from the Quake games, where there’s more of an emphasis on verticality and staying constantly moving. I wasn’t really able to get into the Quake games (maybe because of that?) so I can’t say of that’s true but it’s interesting if so. obviously I wish they had modeled them more after the original Doom games though lol
