first impressions of Oblivion Remastered are… pretty meh?

first of all it is visually gorgeous. in terms of graphical fidelity it’s definitely the best-looking game my computer has ever run, and it also has a pretty good aesthetic too

unfortunately it has some performance issues and graphical glitches that are moderately annoying. also the UI is kinda clunky to use, but so was the original Oblivion’s so that’s fair I guess

but the main thing is… the magical feeling I get from playing Skyrim just feels missing from this game somehow. idk; I can’t put my finger on what, exactly, I want this game to have. I do feel like the fantasy stuff is pretty insipid - which is a criticism I’ve always had about Oblivion. but I think there might be something else missing too. something important. I just don’t know what it is yet

maybe I just miss being able to mod the game and have new mods to get excited about? maybe I miss having a DLC entirely focused on vampires lol. maybe it’s just the unfamiliarity, and I’m going to warm up to it over time. but for now all I know is that Oblivion Remastered isn’t pulling me in the way that Skyrim always does

@kasdeya My opinion was definitely affected by nostalgia. Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game so the moment I stepped outside for the first time and one of the wilderness themes started playing, the nostalgia hit like a truck. It was like I was a teenager all over again, reliving the magical experience I had with that game.

I guess for me it's kind of backwards compared to how you feel. While I loved Skyrim when it released and it remains my most played Steam game to this day, there were a lot of things I felt Oblivion did better. Maybe I just burned out on Skyrim or something, because Oblivion Remastered felt so fresh and new while also hitting me with boatloads of nostalgia.

I guess with less nostalgia coloring my viewpoint I'd probably see it as a game with gorgeous graphics but broken mechanics.

There are already loads of mods by the way. Some admittedly are half-assed ports of old Oblivion mods, but there are a lot of good ones now that fix some of the usual Bethesda jank.

@emberquill I do really like that you can use a torch when your weapons are put away, instead of the torch taking up a hand that could be holding a weapon or shield. and I also really like that there’s a dedicated key for casting a spell instead of having to put it in one of your hands. it honestly felt like Skyrim was a step backward when it comes to those two things

and I’m glad that you’re able to enjoy the remaster so much! I’m starting to think that it’s just not for me, but I still can’t identify why that is. I’m probably going to keep playing just a bit longer, and maybe look up how to join the Thieves’ Guild or the Dark Brotherhood since those are the two things that appeal to me the most

Oblivion Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood minor spoilers (how to join), mentions murder because Dark Brotherhood

@kasdeya Joining those guilds is actually one of the things I liked better in Oblivion, because you don't just pick up a quest, do the quest, and join. For the Dark Brotherhood, just murder someone. Any non-hostile NPC will do. You can look up a list of NPCs with no quest involvement if you want. Someone will show up to recruit you when you sleep.

For the Thieves Guild, you can raise your bounty by any means and go to jail and then someone will eventually recruit you (it may take a while for them to find you), or you can find one of the wanted posters for the Gray Fox, then persuade any of the Imperial City beggars to tell you more about him to learn how to join.
