Don't suppose anybody has a clean install file for Cheat Engine?
The file from the official site gets flagged by Windows Defender because it's packed with bloatware (and if you follow the link on the site to documentation of this issue, it leads to a forum thread from 2006 where one of the devs uses the R word to describe people that have any issues with this...)
I've had to uninstall and delete my WeMod/Wand account because of their decision to add unecessary features, AI, etc, to drive people toward an exorbitant paid sub, but I'd still like to have some kind of alternative to make games more accessible.
If not Cheat Engine, then maybe some recs for an alternative?
@TheSunnyOne I would strongly recommend against installing Cheat Engine using that installer. the last time I tried (which was admittedly years ago) it ended up giving me so much malware that I had to wipe my drive and reinstall Windows from scratch
at the time I was able to find a clean installer hidden on some obscure corner of their website, but I don’t remember exactly where/how I found it, I’m not sure if it still exists, and I’m not sure if I would trust it anyway
an alternative that I’ve used is called ArtMoney which is missing all of the advanced features of Cheat Engine and is slightly more annoying to use, but it’s functional enough for basic memory-scanning
@kasdeya
Does ArtMoney have easy to find/use cheat tables?
Am so very far from being technical anymore, which is why we really liked WeMod before all of this...it was simple.
Ideally we need to be able to load a table, activate it, and confirm the cheats we want to use in a game and that'd be it.
@TheSunnyOne it looks like there’s this list of cheat tables at least, but it’s not exactly searchable and it seems like a relatively small list. unfortunately I never used cheat tables in ArtMoney so I don’t know anything about that
I wonder if ArtMoney could import Cheat Engine cheat tables too. I bet the format isn’t too difficult to parse. it might be worth a try, at least
also omg did WeMod die?? I remember it enshittifying pretty aggressively at one point but I found it extremely convenient. that’s such a shame
@kasdeya
WeMod changed its name to Wand, added game guides, maps, and AI features, then announced that if users wish to continue using the cheats portion of the app (the only service anybody ever wanted from it) they'd either be limited to 2 hours per day, or they'd have to pay $8 per month for unlimited use.
@TheSunnyOne oh wow. that sounds like a fantastic way to kill their entire company
I really hope something free will be created to replace it
@kasdeya @TheSunnyOne oh, I remember using that program to manually search for health value and freezing it so I won't die in Project I.G.I...
Fun times
@TheSunnyOne Wish I could help with a clean install, but the last time I used Cheat Engine, I'm pretty sure I had to compile it myself to get a clean build without all the malware, and it was such a pain that I decided to never do it again.
Artmoney is probably the best alternative.
