oh? I noticed that your matrix account uses the matrix.org homeserver. did you know that if you use a homeserver besides matrix.org you’ll be helping the network grow more robust and decentralized?
for example there’s transkitty.nyaan.si which I- oh that one’s gone
well I’ve seen a lot of folks using miau.dev which is run by- oop the server has been offline since a month ago
well there’s always homeserver.project.foxgirls.online which- ah, they’ve announced that the project will be shut down due to creative differences
anyway make sure not to use matrix.org or the network will be less robust!
this post inspired by me taking this advice and ending up with a homeserver that shut down within 2 weeks of me joining
(need more cuddles)
@kasdeya Everyone yelling that “Matrix is so great” and using an account on matrix.org cant be taken seriously.
@kasdeya Mastodon also has this problem a little bit, but I don't think it's nearly as bad? Like, I've had a couple of instances close on me but my main account I haven't needed to move since I joined.
@Owlor yeah I’ve joined tech.lgbt and now cryptid.cafe and both of them have been amazing! so I’ve never run into this problem on Fedi thankfully
I wonder if that’s because a Fedi server is more like a community where you interact with the folks you’re helping every day - but a Matrix homeserver is more like a public service where you just see an abstract number of how much the server is getting used
@kasdeya xD fr this is how it be
im still on matrix.org bc i dont wanna bother making a new acct just yet, but i know a lot of ppl have had a good time switching over to unredacted.org's server
@kasdeya @Owlor though tbh, i don't personally treat a fedi server that much like that (i post unlisted so i don't show up in the local timeline, and i don't view the local timeline either)
your fedi server is more prominently displayed i guess, but i've never really gave that much of a shit about fedi servers in terms of "what server you chose says something about you" any more than what email server i use says something about me. it's infrastructure.
@5225225 @kasdeya I think fedi does a pretty reasonable job of threading that needle between there being enough interconnectedness that you feel like you're actually maintaining a community and not just lending your serverpower to strangers, while at the same time not feeling like an insular forum to use.
@kasdeya yeah the matrix servers not being very many with open registration and being here for the long run is a problem. however there's still some listed at https://servers.joinmatrix.org/
i just had to 'emigrate' from envs.net and ended up experimenting with my own server using conduit on my yunohost.
