I have such a weird relationship to TTRPGs tbh. like I have a deep love and appreciation for some and an equally deep and mostly irrational hatred of others and yet I’ve barely been able to actually play a game of any of them

I was just reminded today that FATE exists and now I’m scrolling through the FATE subreddit and literally getting teary-eyed over this RPG that I might never be able to properly play

@kasdeya do you know about solo oracles and systems for solo play? It’s how I’ve managed to blow some of the dust off my more… niche selections.

@kasdeya I really love FATE and I really love the condensed version with the updates to the system, but I never managed to play past the first session with all the groups I played

@passocacornio awww. yeah I’ve heard it’s really hard to convince someone to play a system other than D&D and maybe also Pathfinder, for whatever reason. I kinda wonder if D&D players assume that all TTRPG systems will have a learning curve as steep as D&D, so they’re hesitant to start that learning curve again from square one

@agentultra I do! I’ve never tried them but I’ve thought about it a lot. maybe it would be worthwhile for me to learn more about them and how they work

@kasdeya nah... DnD players have difficulty seeing game design as a diverse space, so if a system do things differently than D&D 5E (specifically) the say is bad design. that's one of the main reasons even pathfinder is difficult to convince people to play. I found much more success convincing DnD 3.5 players to play different systems than 5E players

r/FATErpg is full of players who feel exactly how I do about TTRPGs and love FATE for exactly the reasons that I do and that’s honestly so validating and refreshing to see

I’m so used to enjoying things by using them “wrong” in order to suit my needs and often not even realizing that I’m using them “wrong” at all until I see how everyone else uses them (like how I play WoW, or how I deliberately ignore like 90% of a movie’s plot, or how I play Skyrim)

so idk it’s just really nice to fall in love with a TTRPG system and then find out that that system’s community is as frustrated as I am with the mainstream systems - for exactly the same reasons that I am. and read about how FATE perfectly fits how they want a TTRPG system to work, for exactly the same reasons that it does for me
