okay I’m morbidly curious about the correlation between transness and unemployment. are you…

35% cis and employed
9% cis and unemployed
21% trans and employed
22% trans and unemployed
6% neither cis nor trans, and employed
3% neither cis nor trans, and unemployed

@kasdeya I am trans and employed, but I am not out at work. You may want to adjust followup polling if you’re looking for more accurate data.

@Steve to be honest there’s already a massive sampling bias since I’m asking on such a niche online platform - so I’m not going to take these results too seriously anyway hehe. also it felt weird and invasive to ask trans people if they were out or not, I guess - but maybe that’s me being overly cautious

@kasdeya trans and self-employed, if it matters

@kasdeya Okay, I chose trans and employed, but just wanted to clarify that I'm retired on Social Security earned from past employment, which I reckon still counts?

@kasdeya thank you so much for the neither cis nor trans options, I finally feel seen

@kasdeya not exactly by choice, my SS is not enough to set myself up, without my caregiver wages.
Essentially I CAN live on my SS where I am (California), but I can't get into a place, that I can stay, without my wages, because everything is owned by equity companies that require 2-1/2 times the rent, to move in.
I know this because my friend wasn't good with her inheritance and she literally just ran out of money (rent was 2x her actual income so every month she got closer to broke, until she didn't have enough to stay) and where I live is cheap enough for her to live on her income. But I had to sign for everything, because she didn't make 2.5x the rent.

@kasdeya Data collected where I live for the process of recommending to the government a way to deal with transgender issues (which was heavily criticised since it didn't consult any trans advocacy groups) found that, where I live, trans and non-binary individuals are more likely to be unemployed and more likely to have difficultly finding a place they can rent. Up to 10% of queer people at large face difficulties with employment and housing, where I live. And for trans and non-binary individuals, this jumps to up to 20%.
I am, myself, struggling with employment, having been fired from a job due to likely transphobic sentiment from the employer and/or workplace.
I am just glad my landlord rents out for cheaper than affordable in the area and is a family friend. I don't have to fear for housing at the moment.
It really fucking sucks.

@kasdeya Non binary and self employed.

@kasdeya I threw "neither cis nor trans" into a search engine and TIL about isogender

thanks for that, wish I had thought to ask sooner

@kasdeya Non-binary and barely employed after six months unemployed.

@shijikori that is terrible omg. this is definitely what I suspected in terms of employment, but it didn’t occur to me that housing discrimination was a problem as well. I absolutely hate that

@fxchip to be honest I didn’t even know that isogender was a thing! I just guessed that there must be some third category that I’m not thinking of, so I added it as an afterthought - but I’m really glad that I did because a lot of people feel seen and included who otherwise wouldn’t

@kasdeya yeah. iirc, it's the combined data between housing and employment difficulties that shows the results i mentioned. I recall trans and non-binary having far more issues specifically on the employment side.
For housing, it's not as bad but it's still worse than lesbian and gay counterparts who have it slightly harder than cis-het people for both work and housing but not by a lot. Somewhere around 2 to 3% worse odds than cis-het.

@kasdeya Trans and unemployed but that’s because I literally just dropped out of school and now I don’t have my on campus job

@kasdeya the quality of the employment is also something to look into lol, I am technically employed but I earn less than I would on unemployment here (can't take the option for immigration status reasons)

@kasdeya Therian and self-employed, I wear a collar when dealing with customers. I'd also wear ears and tail but thought that might not be accepted well, for now my phantom tail just keeps wrapping around things, it's more than just an anxiety relief, it obliterates me with cute euphoria. I also told ChatGPT to talk like a furry since I use it for coding assistance help at work. My furry obsession only deepens with age, one day I'll yolo it and wear a full fursuit at work.

@kasdeya I'm nonbinary and self-employed. I will never, ever, ever, EVER be employed by anyone else.

@kasdeya i feel like this poll could be helped with a further distinction whether someone is out (or even out, stealth or closeted but that's a lot of options)

@kasdeya Uh... it is not as simple as a checkbox.

I came out and transitioned at the German subsidary of an American company, at a time when DEI was still in existence. One of the local highest ranking managers announced my coming out as "an opportunity to prove that our diversity efforts are for real".

After that shit happened. Had I had any selfrespect, I'd have quit, but needing a steady income, I trudged on. I started looking for an alternatiove, but despite my renomee pretransition, no one who knew my history was willing to hire me.

When I addressed the issues with HR, they said, my complaints are hard to prove, but, to make things easier for everybody, they offered a compensation package in case I'd be leaving.

Finally I found a new, and even better job at a company who had never heard of me, so my proven experience, and my passing helped me to be hired. Former colleagues of mine, who were working at that new company, told my new manager and my futher team about me, the minute they heard that I was starting. However I was still a good match for the job role. But they were very close to cnacel the offer.

The new company, who had not been witnessed my transition, but only knew about it in theory, was better than the previous, but still, some small and big agressions still happened.

@kasdeya I voted trans and unemployed but specifically I'm on disability. Though I am currently working on an unpaid practicum for peer support.

@kasdeya how the fuck can you be neither cis or trans
who out here kinda changing they gender?

0

@kasdeya I'm trans and self-employed but making very little money from said self-employment, and mostly living off of savings+investments that I accumulated before I transitioned

Post-transition has definitely been a lot harder to find a job that works for me, and it doesn't help that I also have a chronic pain disability which is super common for trans folks due to poorly-understood co-occurring conditions that are overly-represented amongst trans folks

@kasdeya So for that reason I selected trans and unemployed.

Also I've been trying to get on disability but that's been difficult too, because social security doesn't consider my disability to be valid and they also got weirdly transphobic at me as part of the most recent determination.

@kasdeya @fxchip loved that option so much that I didn't even get too hung up on the equally missing "neither employed nor unemployed" options until now 😌
