kas complains about the American school system. moderate outrage
Show content

I’m so glad that American high schools are forcing kids to memorize math formulas and Shakespeare and historical dates. instead of teaching them:

  • how to find information online and verify that it’s accurate
  • critical thinking in general
  • how to identify that you’re in a cult and what to do
  • how to identify that your parents are abusive and what to do
  • how to budget
  • how to find a job
  • how to choose a profession
  • literally anything about mental health like even just basic grounding techniques or how to recognize a panic attack
  • basic nutrition
  • what is legal or illegal
  • food safety and how to cook food
  • how to identify and avoid dark patterns, common scams, and manipulative capitalist tactics

or oh I don’t know how about “what fascism is, why it’s bad, and how to identify it”. but no I’m sure that the themes and symbolism of Hamlet are equally as important as all of this stuff

@kasdeya we can't have the education system educating people — otherwise they might start thinking for themselves, and then how are other systems meant to exploit them?! /j

also it is deeply fucked up that there’s an entire category of mandatory classes dedicated to teaching kids the “correct” art to appreciate and the “correct” way to appreciate art in general

@kasdeya how creepily serendipitous is it that I'm currently watching this analysis of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared by Seagan Hawkes, which has a lot of talking points about how education systems feel a bit cultish and coercive

@kasdeya my art teacher in early elementary school made fun of another student's drawing. in a totally hushed room, she leaned over and said "oh, honey... that looks like a bra 🥴"

you *know* everyone in that room heard her

@Undead_Zeratul omg interesting - I might watch this later because that’s definitely a concept that I care a lot about

@kasdeya getting to the end of the video now, the second half shifts gears in the interpretation since it deals with the TV Show instead of the web series, but if you haven't heard of Sagan Hawkes before, he tends to focus on analog horror and other web folklore with a nice analytical lens, I've been slowly getting through his catalog this past year and he's definitely been a recent gem in the rough from YouTube creators

@kasdeya the same for German schools. But we actually had "cooking" as a subject in 8th or 9th grade. And we learned about fascism and how to identify it. But about a third of the population seemingly didn't pay attention.
