What is it with Mario game lovers and their love for all the wacky and wonky controls in Mario games?

I’ve played a whole lot of games, lots of different genres even if a few of them are my favorites. I love the controls in the new DK game, Astrobot is pretty much peak platformer for me, etc.

But every dang Mario game has difficult to use non-intuitive controls and I fail at things because the controls are wonky, not because of a lack of ability. Not to mention the ever present awful camera.

If I was awful at every game like that (2D and 3D) that would be one thing. But Mario I have to work much harder at, and at no point does the control feel any better.

Surly I can’t be the only one that this is happening to?

@yon I was going to ask “what do you mean exactly? “, but then I thought of like 10 examples of “this was way harder than it needed to be” just in the 2D games of yore, never mind more modern games with motion controls, so yeah “Good point”. What is up with Mario games and wacky controls?”

@yon how are the super Mario world SNES/GBA controls? I wish more Mario games would control more like that. Especially the new super Mario/ super Mario Wonder, those games have some awkward controls. It's more to do with the physics and then the controls themselves.

@yon I've never had issues with Mario controls, but Mario games were the first games I ever played, so that may be part of it.

What I really hate in games is when the character always moves in the direction of the camera, so you can't move and look around at the same time! This ruins games for me.

@Rob399 In my case every single Mario game across time handles odd to me. I’m always fighting the controls even if I don’t want to.

@lalah 3D Mario (and a lot of 3D Nintendo games, seems like they are stuck in Super Mario 64 mode) has the most awful camera. It’s always pointing somewhere awkward so I’m not seeing what I want to:(

Again all of this is a bit baffling to me since DK:B plays great to me. If the follow up to Odyssey played that smooth I’d be happy. Heck have “wonky Mario Controls” and “normal sane controls” as options. Not trying to *stop* anyone from enjoying games the way *they* want to. That’s just silly.

(I do want a mix of Odyssey and MK:World. One single unified world/map, and let me earn vehicles and let me drive around. A bit like GTA but Mario. The tech (thanks Monolith Soft!) is clearly right there.)

@yon I totally agree when it comes to the newer games. Mario Galaxy felt so weird and bad to control that I couldn’t get beyond the first real stage

but, Mario 3 is one of the only platformers that I’ve enjoyed playing. I guess the raccoon Mario does feel a bit weird to control - especially the P-speed thing and tapping A to hang in the air. but otherwise I guess it’s become kind of like my baseline for what a platformer is. that and Mario 1

Mario 64 controls like ass though
