the ragebait cycle: thinking about a pattern of shitty political internet drama
Show content
  1. ragebait website posts a deliberately terrible take that is social justice coded like “Blade Runner is cultural appropriation because there are geishas in it”
  2. chuds swarm in pretending that this is what all social justice is like. now they have one more screenshot they can share that affirms their distorted values and causes hatred of their enemies
  3. twitter leftists rush in and fight with the chuds and loudly tell everyone how bad the ragebait website and article are
  4. the article gets a fuckton of views
  5. repeat forever

this entire pattern needs to die. I feel like the main culprits are:

  • engagement-based algorithms making sure to spread anger-memes as far and wide as possible
  • people don’t know that ragebait websites exist, or don’t know how to recognize ragebait
  • people haven’t cultivated the habit of considering which thought-germs they’re spreading and being intentional about what they spread and why (this is very difficult! but very worthwhile. I’m still learning this one)
