I find it funny how Winux (a Linux distro that looks uncannily similar to Windows 11) is advertising itself as
No hardware limitations, no absurd requirements.
when Linux has notoriously spotty hardware support and it has the absurd requirements of “every user must be very technical, very patient, very comfortable on the command line, and they must enjoy tinkering every time something breaks”
I definitely think Winux is a cool concept but like, I’m not going to install this on my mom’s computer and trust it to not explode in 2 months when the DE gets borked by an update or something
@kasdeya the fact that they sell a "pro key" to unlock additional features is just the icing on the cake, really.
I don’t think Linux users understand that people use Windows because they want their operating system to Just Work, and tinkering on the Linux command line is:
@emberquill oh yikes I didn’t even see that. that is fucking gross
@kasdeya hardware incompatibilities have been with me since day 1 of using linux. To quickly learn the basics, I tried manually installing arch, which I managed to, but the WIFI DRIVERS DIDN'T WORK. Before that, the fingerprint scanner never worked, nor hybrid sleep (suspend to ram then ssd after a while to prevent battery drain). Nowadays, I don't even think about these tradeoffs, but looking back, I accepted these only because I was very motivated. Most people aren't that interested in learning linux.
@kasdeya never heard of this distro until now and just found this 🤨 https://www.zdnet.com/article/why-i-no-longer-recommend-this-windows-like-linux-distro/
@kasdeya found it through their wikipedia article: "ZDNet warns that it might be a scam". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winux
