new annoying writing feedback unlocked: I’ve been told that I spend way too many words describing the expressions, reactions, and emotions of characters during dialogue, and that all of that should be clear from the dialogue itself without additional description
honestly, I was kinda stunlocked by that feedback in the moment, but here’s how I wish I responded:
I don’t care. if that’s what good writing is to you, then I don’t have any interest in being a good writer to you. I have spent my entire life struggling to understand any of the things I describe, but I know how important they are to most people, so I’m going to describe them whether you like it or not, because if I don’t, there will simply be no emotion in my text. and don’t you even think about trying to “encourage” me by saying I’m wrong about that, because you yourself have described my mannerisms as cold and robotic more than once

I feel this so much omg. what’s considered “good art” is actively harmful to me and what’s considered “bad art” is not only safe for me but is often something that I love. I hate when people assume that everyone is trying to make “good art” by the mainstream definition
for the longest time I didn’t believe that I could make art at all because every tutorial was telling me to make harmful art, so I conflated all art with harm. but thankfully lately I’ve decided that I can simply Not Give A Shit and make art that someone like me could safely read and enjoy
