@OrionKidder only reason I'm not switching to Linux is that I need adobe softwares for work. :(
@OrionKidder We cannot afford to not be kind, not just for the sake of Linux, but for the sake of humanity. Being kind, is costly, and requires a lot more mental effort than just telling people to read manuals, but it is a required skill if we want to change the world for the better. Blockading people out of the needed skills they are going to learn the easy way or the hard way helps no one, least of all, them. Help them learn, and help them fix what they broke, because we were like them, and cannot forget the kindness that we needed then, too!
@OrionKidder thanks for posting this, ❤️ kindess costs nothing and if you don't have the energy to help if you could look t someone to where they could get help or someone who will then that's fantastic too!
As long as people who are asking for help are willing to use the advice or try to help themseves in whatever way they can then I don't see the problem with asking for help. ❤️ Its a bit sad to hear some people are unkind, it's easy to just scroll on and ignore things instead...surely?
@OrionKidder
My #linux brethren this is the moment we have been waiting for!
This is what we have been training for!
Now is the time!
GO FOREWARD AND MAKE TUX PROUD!!

@OrionKidder
I'd say that this advice applies to lots of things. It's a good general principle to follow.
*Pokes around*
What does this do?
Congratulations you're the first person to receive a reply at least I think that's what I think this does....
@alemarcati @OrionKidder it’s definitely possible for some adobe software to run under wine https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?iId=17&sClass=application - which if you’re new to linux is another layer of complexity.
I have used wine for lots of years for gaming but not personally ran adobe software so I can’t really say how good or bad the experience is. Would probably be worth some searching/video watching if you’re curious though.
@alemarcati @OrionKidder There's always the option to run the Adobe crap (yeah i have a personal hatred for them) isolated in a win VM. I use Serif's Affinity stuff like this, and it's good enough.
Until all the software houses have understood that Linux is no longer "niche", the Windows-VM approach is probably gonna stay with us. But it's definitely workable.
Recommend VMware Workstation (free now), because the graphics performance is superior.
@IndigoOriole @OrionKidder this needs to be posted on the forums. Because people are invested on are nice, people on the forms are terrible. Maybe not all of them. But the arch Linux forums, are horrible. #linux
I thank you for your kindness, and I offer some kindness. Please take this funny blurry cow. I found it on the Internet, looking for something else that I did not find. 🤔🧐🤭😅
@IndigoOriole @OrionKidder I think kindness gets easier the more you practice it. Certainly feels that way.
@elebertus @alemarcati I can only speak from my experience of getting Scrivener to work in Linux, which is that it's not just a matter of loading Wine and then loading Scrivener inside it. It's not an emulator, after all. There are all kinds of other settings and stuff--which I do *not* understand!--that allow it to work, and I'm just dumb lucky that someone took all those settings and made an custom installation inside of Lutris.
@phoenixgee @OrionKidder that's a layer of complexity I would like to avoid. But I'll look into it.
I would prefer to recommend KVM + AQEMU. KVM is Linux's native virtualization ("virtual machine") support, and AQEMU provides a nice GUI on top of it. (There are other options as well, all the way down to the bare-bones "virt-manager" tool or even command-line tooling, but I definitely would not recommend that latter to newcomers.)
If KVM does not meet your needs, you can switch later. But if it does, it's likely to be more reliable through OS upgrades.
@vvbudh @OrionKidder This is a wonderful picture of the gentoo cow, thank you!
100%. It requires some expertise and experience. All mine is with games and there’s some nice tools to abstract some of the config and stuff. Maybe as you say can be used for non-games
https://lutris.net - game specific last I check
https://usebottles.com - haven’t used but isn’t specifically for games
Also searches (*not AI*) like “$windowsProg linux +bottles” and some variations will go a long way too. People enjoy writing about this stuff.
@alemarcati @phoenixgee I hear ya. I would love avoid running Scrivener in Lutris. You have to decide what's a bigger pain in the ass: making things work in Linus or dealing with Windows. (And you have to decide what your values are, too.) Everyone's different.
@IndigoOriole @OrionKidder WHAAAAAAAA!? You’re joking!? I found this on a whim looking for “low quality”!!
@alemarcati @phoenixgee @OrionKidder
sorry for chiming in, but I thought my experience might be relevant here, as I've actually done that (Adobe InDesign in a VM). Also do keep in mind that I've been using Linux for decades now, and I'm *not* a professional in terms of Adobe software. I do however maintain the SPHERIC Newsletter, that was originally done with InDesign, and I needed to port the design over to Scribus, which is what I use now.
In my very limited experience, the main downside of running Adobe inside a VM is performance. You'll want a beefy VM, and you'll want to spend some time ensuring that graphic acceleration works. It's also cumbersome of course for the VM/host file exchange, but that can be set up with a network folder exported by the host (there might be smarter ways to do it these days, but that's the way I did it)
The one thing I don't know how well it works is input management, especially if you need e.g. tablet pen pressure. I have no idea if and how well it gets exported to the host, although worst case you can actually dedicate the hardware specifically to it when it's running.
@OrionKidder Linux users can't even be kind to each other, or show deference to learning from folks who've used Linux *longer than they've been alive*
Windows converts are just fresh meat to the intellectual slaughter to that lot
@OrionKidder this is extremely important and someone needs to tell this to reddit and Stack Exchange tbh
